so im probably going to buy an 83 yota on monday. its in ok shape. it has a 21ri engine in it. he says it is from japan. so i was wondering if anyone knows much about these motors. do most parts from the 22r swap straight in? ill be paying 1250 for the truck. sound ok?

 

i believe it's called the 21RU motor? idk.

I DO KNOW that it's a TOTAL piece of crap.

buy the truck, and a different motor.

 

Was built completely for emissions not HP/torque. Has a smaller CC displacement than the 22R series. They were imported as replacement motors, don't even think they were stock in stateside trucks, some folklifts though.

 

i ended up getting a 79 with the 20r motor.

 

i had a 21r in a 79 i picked up. didnt know it was a 21r until some time after i owned it.
had a weber, a cam, and a thorley header. had almost zero power. i could rev the crap out of it all day though and nothing ever broke. it never failed me. drove it 15 miles with no alternator/water pump belt. temp guage pegged the whole way. was a bit low on coolant. threw a belt on and it was fine. did i mention it had no power, even with 4.88's and 33's.
