83 issues

hey im new here and i just bought an 83 4x4 i have an issue though thought you guys may know i believe its the carb but not 100 percent sure im new to the whole carburator world ok my truck i have to repeadly tap the gas say 20-30 times to get the truck to run when it does i have to hold it down to keep it running i havent had much time to really check the thing out but when it does run its obviously getting too much fuel it reaks its so much coming out the exhaust so im guessing just needs a carb?? what are my options here stock? weber? dont want to spend tons of money but just wanting some input also these are fuel pumps that run off the cam like old fords right? or is it an electric in the tank???

sounds like your choke is stuck .. (my best guess)

simple carb clean usually works .. but may need overhaul ..

Do you not have a period button on your keyboard??? Fist off, you shouldn't need a new carb. The fuel pump is driven off the cam. You might just need to play around with the choke linkage and mixture screws. The first thing you should do if you haven't already is go buy a service manual. It will show you how to check your choke and mixture settings. You may want to rebuild the carb but I see no point in replacing it.

Could be alot of things, your best bet is to pickup a Haynes manual for your truck and a carburetor kit and some carb cleaner, tear the carb down, clean all of the passages, be careful not to lose anything and be careful undoing screws, some stuff is spring loaded with little ball bearings and springs that are really easy to lose. Sounds like its either getting too much fuel or not enough, Check simple things first, fuel filters for blockages and your fuel lines for leaks, they could possibly be blocked too.. the pickup in the tank might be clogged, the best way to check is to pop off the fuel line at the carb and get someone to crank it, have something to catch the fuel in, Check the vacuum lines for cracks, or even just not hooked up aswell. Another thing to check is the fuel solenoid on the carb It has a wire running to it, it should make a "click" sound when you turn the key to the "ON" position, get a friend to listen carefully for it(dont mistake other relays for the "CLICK" sound). The choke could be stuck, free up the the choke assembly with some wd-40 or similar, since its an 83 the choke should be electronic so check that too.

If you dont feel like fixing the stock carb upgrade to a weber 32/36 DGEV, there is Weber conversions for 22R's on Ebay for $240, I recommend the 32/36 over the 38 unless your running a cam and a header, even then though the 32/36 uses less fuel and is plenty sufficient for a 22R.

I learned all of this myself with my carb issues, I rebuilt my entire carb, fixed everything.. and it just came down to it being worn out, the power valve refuses to work(sticks open) and of course its at the very bottom of the carb, so its a complete tear down every time I try to fix it and since its at the bottom, It causes it to run extremely rich and as soon as I turn it off all of the fuel in the float bowl and fuel line starts draining into the intake, only fix at this point is a new carb, I think I could fix it but at this point I really dont want to tear it down again
