83 22r questions
Greetings,
I recently picked up an 83 4x4 pickup and have Ben going thru it doing a full tune up since the owner has not done much in the 10 years and 10k or so miles he's put on the truck. My main questions are in regard to te 22r not seeming to rev as high as it would indicate on the dash. The current tach does not work, so I installed a cheap import tach, which may or may not be working properly, but it only indicates a max rpm of 4k or so (pushing it any farther seems like too far with the truck, but maybe I'm wrong.) I suppose it's possible that the tach is faulty, however if it is not, where do o start looking? The motor is rebuilt and running a weber 32/36 carb with no smog equipment. I just replaced the Bosch coppers with a set of NGK platinup (gp) plugs and foidn throttle response and low end power to be noticeably better (seat of the pants dyno.) my question is, is the lack of revving up somethig that would point to a fuel issue, possibly a carb issue, or a spark issue? Assuming the tach reads true, why wouldn't the motor want to go passed 4k or so? I have very little knowledge on the parts used in the rebuild. I do however have a second gauge cluster so I plan to start by swapping it in to see what that tachometer reads. I suppose maybe it's better to trust my ear here than an import tach. Any opinions, advice, or criticism welcomed! Thanks

I wouldn't worry thinking into it much. There isn't much power or torque on the high end of these engines plus they sound like all hell is about to break loose when you get them in the upper end of the RPM range. I know my engine can handle more, but I don't take it past 4,000 RPM

Thanks a ton, that about solves it for me. Motor seems healthy as can be, but after previously owning the 3.slow, with this being my first 22r I wasn't sure if that was normal. Now that I know that the motor starting to scream around 4k isn't unconmon, I won't worry about it. Thanks again.
