the door tag said 4/83. me and my buddy puled a 7/83 out of the same spot on his dads property and they bolth have the short shaft.my old box does not have the provisoins or any area where they could be taped im not saying there not out there.

 

Just did this yesterday to my buddies 81 truck. Got the pump and all the brackets from an 89 ifs 22re truck and swapped it over the high pressure line off the pre 85 is the only thing you need i believe and an 83 steering box or tap yours.

 

My 81 has power steering and power brakes, so maybe its an SR5 how would I know? Is there a certain character on the vin I could look for?

 

yep ... serial # JT4RN__S ... is an SR5 (this is by memory)

One thing, if you pulled power steering from an 83: a previous owner very well could have added power steering to it from an 84 or 85. People have had a lot of time to mess around with these trucks over the years...you just never know what's been done.
