‘80 Toyota 4x4 - add power steering

Hi all, I have a 1980 Toyota 4x4 Pickup that we need to add PS to. It has a 20r motor. I have searched the forums, but hoping someone can confirm what years PS setups would indeed work for us?

I know what parts I need, just need to know what years we can source them from and if it can be from 20r/22r(e)

Also, if you have what we need I am interested in buying it.

thank you!

Bryan

79-95 20r, 22r,22re , except for the box , box is 79-83 only .
you must be sure your head has the bosses for it though . some are NOT drilled

Corey, why wouldn’t the later model boxes work? I thought most people preferred to use the ‘86-88 or ‘89-95 gear boxes? I’m actually accruing parts to add PS to mine and I had planned to use a box from a ‘86-88

you can certainly use them , its just there not a "bolt on" , you'll need to add a frame plate .
its a different system called hi steer .

ok, I understand what you are saying now. I’m getting everything together to switch mine to power steering and high steer. It’s surprisingly hard to find parts for these old trucks, but with patience it’s happening

Do parts from 2wd models work as well? I would buy the refurbished 1979 4wd power steering box

Just a bit of extra info/clarification on what Slacker correctly stated:
4WD
Option 1 - stock 79-83 power steering
79-95 PS pump works on all (not sure if same mount bracket on 20R?)
79-83 box/pitman (+possible drop drag link for those in the +/- 2" lift area)

Option 2 is to go high steer, but you have to have at least 3" of suspension lift to do this mod.
3" may require a low drop or flat pitman to clear, or clocking the box so the drivers side spring doesn't hit the pitman at full compression.
If you're at 4"+ lift, you really should do this because it's vastly superior for lifted rigs.

2WD rigs are a bit unknown for me, but my educated guess is that the pump is the same but the steering is a lot more like the later IFS and uses a "side to side" box rather than the "push pull" early 4WD style.

Not that any idiotic moron on this forum would ever have used PS fluid in their PS in, oh, let's just say an 87 pickup, just for example, mind you, and wound up with failed gaskets on the pressure hose, worst leaking down into the alternator, causing it to fail repeatedly. Nope, no one here is that kind of stupid. No way. None of us. <AHEM!>

Nothing to see here. Move along, now, move along...
