'75 Hilux 20R Engine Removal
I'm going to pull it today. With the radiator out can I slide it forward enough to pull the engine with the transmission in place, or am I going to have to pull them both? If I have to pull them together maybe someone can tell me now and save me an hour of cursing at my engine.
Oh, and I already pulled the head so I don't have the chain hooks anymore. Can I just sling some webbing under the oil pan and pull the block that way, or is there a better way?

The hook on the front of the engine is for the negative battery cable during a battery jump. I would never, ever pull one of these engine with those hooks. The aluminum head is very fragile. The best way to pull it is to use your old head bolts (if you don't plan to re-use them) or get some similar threaded bolts and lift the short-block out by the deck with those bolts threaded in as far as possible.
The transmission does not need to come out. Just make sure to support it with a jack, block or stand because the engine supports the front end of the tranny.
make sure that head is flat before reassembly. A lot of folks get burned by these aluminum heads being warped.
