22RE swap

I have been thinking about swapping a 22RE into my 83 4x4, more now that I'm watching the snow pile up!

So I figure there is two ways of doing this...

One, swap the entire engine out. Will the later 22R/RE block and head fit? Will it hit the hood? Is there enough room for the EFI ducting between the engine and radiator? I heard the engine mounts may be in a different location depending on the year? Should I use the original ECU or get one of the aftermarket ones such as the ones LCE.

Two, get the EFI components from a 1983 Celica EFI (or maybe a different year/model) and swap those parts onto the existing engine. Will this clear the hood? Is there ducting room as above? Original or aftermarket ECU?

Also is this worth the effort and money for maybe 15 - 20 more horses and 20 or so pounds of torque? I figure this is a middle of the road performance up grade, between a few bolt ons to the existing engine and an all out engine swap.

Sorry if this is in the wrong place or already covered, I thought there is an engine swap section but it didn't stand out to me.

Will the later 22R/RE block and head fit? Yes
Will it hit the hood? No

I would suggest a 89-95 EFI system. (This will not fit a pre 85 block/head)
Also is this worth the effort and money for maybe 15 - 20 more horses and 20 or so pounds of torque? Probably not. It is worth it if you wheel steep trails that have your carb stalling out though. Having done this swap and spent way to much $$ building a 22re with lots of upgrades, If you want more power 2rz,3rz,or 5vz is the way to go

Thanks a lot, you answered well enough for me to file this in the 'not a good idea column'.

I guess a 22R is just a 22R...you cant turn a Clydesdale into a race horse!

Stock Aisin carburetors almost never run out of gas... I've had mine at very steep angles with no problem... not that it matters. But it kind of does!
