200k mile head gasket???

i will be taking ownership of an 82 yota (22r) 2wd with 192k miles (today)

the previous owner says that the truck was driven from dallas to spokane with out any problems he changed the oil upon arrival drove it a week and when checking the oil level noticed white foam on the dipstick so he drained the oil and it had that look of a bad head gasket... he parked it and it has sat just over 2 years

the motor has just under 200k miles on it so the question is since i have to pull the entire top end off... should i just short haul + forged pistons while im at it?

id say... if it had a bad hg AND sat for 2+ yrs, it may be a lost cause... water sitting inside cyl's for 2 years... god only knows what kind of rust has formed...

so then the question is what would my overhead be on a full rebuild vs the value of the truck?

i mean if i put $500+ in the bottom end and its at 200k i might as well take the head and have it replaned and valves redone thats another $200-350 if i dont get a new cam....

so if i put $1500 in to the motor would it be worth it cost to value wise??? (lets say i picked the truck up sub $500 and im doing all the work minus the head)

i guess thats an open to opinion question... would it be more cost effective to scrap this (head/block) engine and start clean with a long block?

In my experience its cheaper to rebuild ur current motor. And it is nice to no exactly what is done to it. I had checked the price on a long block not that long ago and it was like 1650. I rebuild the 22r on my egine stand for about 600 but i do have freinds in machines shops. And btw its always worth it to fix a toyota.

The price of the long block is after taxes

yeah rebuilding your motor is always cheaper, but a long block can be alot less of a hassle, if anything you could get a junkyard motor for about 600-800 but theres always that chance it could blow

i have no problem rebuiling a motor im just wondering since the block has sat 2 years of how badly pitted it might be... a junk yard motor aroound here is ~$140 for a long block.... next question do these motors run a dcp-340 or a dch-340 carb?
