I accidently bought this truck but it seems I got a good one. I was curious what the reserve was on the auction and well, it got me a vehicle. The truck has spent all of it's life in Arizona until now. Shipping to Georgia went well and it arrived on time. First off the seller did disclose that the new paint job is a ten footer. It gets worse the more I look at it. I think a good wet sand session will clear up a good bit of the flaws. I just wish I could have got the truck before the repaint. I have pictures of the before a nd during paint. They did remove the doors and paint the door jambs, actually did a better job than the paint job itself. I thought the carpet was new because of the condition but it's actually the original carpet. The shift boots are mostly intact. The engine was rebuilt, header, Offenhouser ,Webber. Knowing that the beds and the trucks in general are prone to rusting out I'm going to do a few things to prolong the life of the truck changing climates. It's in beautiful condition as far as rust goes, just a little surface rust here and there. I'm going to clean it up and neutralize the rust as best as I can. My first project was replacing a missing heater control valve. What I did was buy a old rusted valve on E-bay just for the bracket. Then I bought a Corolla heater control valve, took the valve of of that bracket and installed it on the correct bracket.
Now I'm on to bed removal, clean underside of bed, rear frame and parts.
Looks like a pretty decent truck. I have an 81 with a rusty frame, so it's parked until I decide what to do. I have another frame. Just hate to tear into it. You're lucky that there's no rust. I hate rust.
Making progress. It amazes me the condition of this truck. As far as the frame goes it really did not need anything, in fact i'm thinking of leaving the shock mount bar as is, just to have part of it original. It's actually in beautiful condition and it pains me to do any scuffing on it. The picture attached shows one cleaning. What looks like rust is actually dirt, it's near perfect. Most other parts are cleaning up really good. I did try today to install the vinyl flooring from ACC, no go for me. It seems way too big? Would need to be trimmed everywhere? Shock mount first wash, that is dirt not rust in picture. rear brake valve cover top side of spare tire mounts, bottom side has some scuffs.
After I got the truck I was looking at the pictures the previous owner sent me and the truck had mud flaps on it at the body shop. While I was talking to the previous owner I asked him if he still had the flaps. He said they must be at the body shop. I figured it was a long shot, not knowing exactly how long ago the truck was painted. Well he ended up getting them and shipped them to me.
I always wondered why people fix rust buckets when you can get rust free ones from the desert southwest. On the flip side, they usually have baked paint and interior parts. I'll take that over rust any day. You got a great start.
I see caravans of vintage Toyota trucks being taken south of the border. Makes me sad and it's making it harder to find parts.
The Bed is back on ! That was a lot of work. Striped down to the "black" factory Rear
primer most places, bare metal in some areas. The bed was and is in fabulous condition, I think it came out good. Pictures don't seem to work good on white bedliner. On to other things, gathering bits and pieces everyday for more projects.
I need some help from someone here. I need some pictures of missing parts on my 82 truck. I'm going to make my own parts but it would be nice to see what they should look like.
First part is the "fuel filler neck protector". I found a part number but did not find a picture.
The other two parts are the "splash shields" attached to the front inner fender to frame. A good photo of them would really help.
I'm also open to buying the parts if anyone has them or know where I should look. I'm assuming the filler pipe protector has three mounting holes?
Well, since the 82 is pretty clean and rust free, and I really want to go mudding some, what should I do? Buy a 83 beater! I saw this truck local to me at a good price. I couldn't resist.
The 83 will get stripped to the bare frame and assembled to do some off road duties so the 82 can relax and have a good retirement.
The rear fender flares are rubber? On my 82 they are fiberglass. They seem to fit well.
It’s an angled piece of steel that bolts to the two upper and one lower holes. You could mock one up pretty easily with a metal break. It looks like you already have all the factory rubber.
Thanks for the reply 1982sr5. Could you snap pictures of the "FRONT" left and right inner fender to frame rubber shields ?
I ended up getting a used inlet protector shield from Toyota Jim. Thanks for the picture, your truck looks in good shape.
I ended up getting a bunch done today on the 83, it was supposed to rain all day but it didn't. Removed radiator, fan, shroud, ac compressor, condenser, lines, smog pump and other related components , charcoal canisters, seat, seat belts, floor mat, spare tire, side mirrors. I replaced the drivers door glass with a part included with sale. Did a general look over, first cleaning, parts list started. Front floor pans ordered. If I had a lift and or a place to actually put this thing I would have started removing the bed and cab. This little project is going to be on hold for a short bit waiting on parts and a place to put it. I have a Datsun B-210 that needs just a tiny bit of TLC then It will free up some room for the 83
Got the floor pans today. It looks like they will cover all of the area that I need them to cover. Still on hold with this project waiting on a spot to put it.
1982Sr5 seems like most are gone, along with the lower "brackets"(they clip into the large round holes in the frame.) that the shield clip pops into. I think my 83 has 2 so I think i'm shy of one bracket for a full set.
