So I rebuilt my carb and now I can not get it to idle. Can someone direct me in how to adjust the idle?

i believe its that flathead screw at the bottom, left of the pic.

just turn it half a turn in with the engine running and if it doesnt speed the idle, thas not it so just turn it back.

 

o ya, and if you forgot to connect that wire (red on mine but could be different for yours) it will idle like crap. check that too.

 

Thanks, I will try that screw tomorrow if it's not to rainy. I see in the manual there is a fast idle adjusting screw (the one you pointed out) and a idle speed adjustiong screw (the other flat head screw to the right). Do you know what the differance is?
It's tough to adjust things because I have to have someone push the gas to keep it running. I will check on that wire as well. I remember it when I rebuilt it, but am not sure that I hooked it up to anything. What exactly does it hook into?

 

one of the screws may be for idle speed on choke (guessing maybe the one to the right) and one for warm running but im not sure. and as for the wire, the guy who sold me my weber carb. said to make sure i connect that wire or it will idle like crap but run fine at higher r's, im not sure what it connects to, ill check tomorrow. maybe you could use a screw driver to hold the throttle cable back a bit so it will stay running to work on it... just an idea

 

I hate my Aisin carb, I cant afford a weber and theres no way im putting another Aisin on my motor, Right now it drains the entire float bowl of fuel into the intake constantly because the power valve is ed so I bought a carb kit, includes everything but the Power valve.. Great, Somebody Direct me to the who decided not a replacement one in a $60 carb kit so I can punch him in the back of the head. Motor wont even start because its flooding so bad, there was fuel pouring out of the exhaust pipe, I feel like ripping the carb off the motor and squishing it flat in my press right now.

 

keep an eye out for a used weber. i got mine for 50 bucks, re-built it and it works great.

 

hey WSUWESTON, im sorry, i told you the wrong wire, the one that wont let it idle is the black one.

 

In that pic, the red wire is the pwr wire to the choke coil, the white/black wires go to the fuel cut solenoid. When the key is turned off, the solenoid closes and cuts fuel to the carb so it doesn't diesel. When I rebuilt my carb, I had some vacuum leaks which meant I had to really crank the idle speed up to get it to run while I debugged it. I sealed up everything, and ended up buying a new carb base plate from Toyota. That fixed it for me. Then I could turn the idle down and also adjust the mixture (with a vac gauge) and now the old 22r purrs.

throw that pos aisan carb out, kick down 289 for a 32/36 weber. beest 289 i ever spent on my truck. you can get a manual or electric choke model. why do you think toyota doesnt carry them anymore? i understand the affordability issue. i got a wife and kid to pay for. thats where most of my money goes. but i needed reliability cause my 81 is my daily driver so it was a justified purchase
