might be a dumb question but im new to this

i have a 1980 toyota long bed 2.2l auto

in that pic the header has a sort of snout coming out but in my truck the snout is connected with i think a aluminium hose (foil like) to the intake but in vids i seen of trucks around same here have them not connected im not sure if the guy i bought it from did it wrong but the hose is loose doesnt even seem right and white smoke has been coming out of it

 

really its part of the egr system, its pretty unessary in my eyes and alot of people pull it off, if it is what i think it is, cant think of the name sadly, 80 22r auto?? didnt know 80 has an auto trans....?
