What kind of tranny jack to buy?

I need to get a tranny jack to get a 3.4 swap started but I don't know what kind to buy. Anyone have one they like? I've been told to get one with some way to adjust the angle. I'll be removing and installing an auto tranny with a tranfer case or 2 attached, so they will be long and heavy. I've seen some cheap ones at a discount tool store.

I bought the Harbor Freight scissor type jack. The design is nice, but it is a little cheap. Once you realize it's strength and use it carefully it works fine. If I evern get around to it I will reinforce it and it will be fine.

I couldn't justify buying a dedicated tranny jack. I don't plan to be making a habit of pulling trannies...

I was going to build something to fit into my floorjack, but was steered to an insert by Harbor Freight instead. I received it before Christmas, but didn't assemble or use it yet.

This is just my opinion, but if your not running a garage, and changing transmissons on a regular basis save your money. Just get someone to help you, with a regular jack and extra set of hands you'll be just fine. Not sure how much different the 3.4 tranny is over the 3.0, but me and another guy can lift the trans and move it around my hand while under the truck.

One of the problems using the "adapter" with a floor jack is the lack of stability. We did the auto trans/transfer into a 3.0 pickup, and it fell over.

Rented a dedicated trans jack (wider base) and it worked fine. (2 guys trying to lift it up and in did not work well.....but we are "old" guys)

Yeah I guess it would really help if you can find a good balance point to lift from? Which way did it fall, to the side or front?

Well I found this one yesterday for only $32, but I had to also buy a new floor jack to fit it for $69: http://community.webshots.com/photo/...31098980hiNCcR

It won't have any problem going high enough but this is as low as it goes:

It went over the end. Was rough to get a balance point with the TC hanging off the side.

OK Already!!!

We had to use the jack from the side of the truck (so it was at 90 degrees to the transmission and the truck) It fell to the TC side. So, yes I guess it would have been off the side of the jack.

I've had this same problem numerous times w/ the adapter.

Oh ok, I was thinking the jack would have to run inline with the tranny and not at 90 degrees to it. So maybe that will help some huh?
