fuel milage
I purchases a 2012 tacoma 4 door automatic last year and thus far my average highway mileage is 20.4mpg. Has anyone got the same problem and what can I do to improve it to 29 like they advertise. I wonder if there are faster gears in the differential on some of the same models?

where do you live? what kind of driving do you do? what kind of fuel? what are the road conditions? how heavy is your foot? what speed on the highway? windows open? roof rack? these are all things that will effect your gas mileage there is a huge difference between 55mph and 70mph when it comes to fuel consumption.

I'm driving down a main highway between 100 and 110 kph as that's the speed limit in ideal conditions. There are vehicles getting 30 + mpg in the same circunstances.A rack on the roof isn't there and that wouldn't make the difference. I have checked it several times. It gets 19.4 to 20.7 mpg. It's a pig.

How many gears does he have? 3 splits so he is turning 800rpm's at 60. I have driver fullsizes for a while. I actually have a 99 silverado 4x4 5.3 motor. I have actually flirted with 30 mpg. Left seattle at 2 am with no traffic and little to no weight in the truck. I pulled in to grants pass Oregon and when I ran the numbers I did average 29.6 mpg. That was on cruise the whole time at 70. No stops and I would take it out of cruise and slowly lose speed up the hills to keep it below 2100 Rpms. When I did that the motor had 60k miles on it now that it has 203k miles on it under similar conditions it get about 19-21. I drive it like a grandpa and do my maintenance on it as well. So well flirting with 30 is possible it's highly unlikely if you put your foot in it. So either your friend has a really cool transmission set up with a lot of splits or a well tuned diesel with tall gears and lots of torque. I say have him let you borrow it and run a tank through it and check for yourself.
