Ebay Seller Griffinparts - Aisin "style" Carburetor

If you plan on buying a new carburetor beware of these Aisin "style" knockoffs from china or tiawan. Their cheap and built to God knows what standards if any. I bought one after reading many, many reviews. What they shipped me was a polished turd.

First, The wiring harness (round plug) was wired wrong. I had to pull the pins out and rewire it correctly before the fuel-cut soleniod, vent, and choke started working correctly. I can see now how the other guy complaining about his alternator being burnt up by this carburetor may be possible.

They also left vacuum ports open with no hard vacuum lines installed. I'm still trying to find all the vacuum leaks. I've got one somewhere on the back of the carburetor but haven't found it yet.

So it's still not running right. I've had to turn the idle mixture screw so far out that it's about to fall out of the threads trying to lean out the idle. The idle linkage is screwed also. After setting the timing, I can't get the idle below 1K rpm. The idle screw only goes so far and then adjusts nothing. Even physically pulling the throttle linkage down won't reduce the idle. I'll probably have to pull this thing and rebuild it. But I may wind up scrapping it and rebuilding one of my two Aisin's sitting on the shelf.

I contribute ALL of these problems to the lack of quality control. It doesn't make good sense. You would think that with vacuum leaks you would be lean at idle. Nope. It was so rich it was ridiculous. The float level looks right though. Yeah Team! So they probably tore a gasket or forgot an o-ring somewhere.

I had pulled the head off expecting a blown gasket but found every single cylinder was cracked between the valve seats. So I bought a complete new head and rebuilt the entire top-end. I had to make sure that it wasn't a mistake I made with vacuum lines being swapped around by mistake or something else making it run like crap before I blamed the carburetor. It took me about a month to finally figure out what was going on with this thing.

I email the seller and explain in detail what I figured out. His response? "We're only a reseller. We don't have any technical support. Sorry" I didn't accept that BS and kept arguing with the guy.

The guy was a complete asshole and tried to blame me saying that he sells his stuff to "professionals" that know what they're doing. But when I finally corner him with logic he agrees to refund 50% of my money.

I went back to put a review on eBay for this carburetor....wouldn't you know it! eBay has removed the options for product reviews and this POS seller still has a 100% rating. I don't even have an option for feedback from this purchase!

I don't know about ya'll but I've been a buyer on eBay for years and I see a trend of eBay slanting the playing field towards their sellers over the past few years. Not this particular seller, but sellers in general with 47 negatives in the past month should not be rated as "Top Sellers"! It's getting harder and harder to find a decent seller anymore.

Please..

Please post a clearer picture of the hand drawn pinout of the plug, its not very legible, it will help anyone that stumbles across this issue in the future..

Looks like they did the typical reversal, not knowing if the diagram is showing the front (mating side) or back side (wire side) of the plug.

Have you contacted the seller or manufacturer about this wiring. Maybe it's a fluke in QC, maybe they need to train assemblers better, and maybe the assembler or QC were just having a bad day.

My apologies. I didn't realize how bad that image really was. I'll redo that here shortly.

The diagram is showing the female PIN that's attached to the carburetor and compares between OEM and their wiring.

It doesn't appear they had any rhyme or reason. It looks like someone was just sticking wires into the PIN connector and didn't care. They had the 12v+ (Red) for the choke in place of the 12v+(White/Black) for the Fuel-cut, the ground (Black) for the FC was wired to the 12v+ for the choke and the 12v+(Black/White) ground for the FC going to the Outer Vent ground (Black). The only one they got right was the ground (Black) for the FC.

Also, I forgot to mention that the choke isn't adjustable! Loosening the 3 screws does nothing. You can't turn it. It also doesn't work. I checked it yesterday and it never heats up at all. So either there is no heater coil inside or it got fried when they reversed the wiring.

I emailed the seller MANY times arguing with him about this. They have no clue and just kept trying different excuses. These people are just a reseller buying in bulk closeouts, so they say. They say they have nothing to do with the manufacturer. But that doesn't make any sense as these same carburetors have been sold for years and are being sold by many different sellers all over the net for the same exact price. So that implies that there is a steady supply being manufactured by someone somewhere. So I asked for the contact information for the actual manufacturer. Nope. They don't have that info. No way to call anyone if you have a problem. Only the con man selling this crap on ebay. I still have all the emails with this guy if you want to see them.

"Here's your "New" carburetor with no warranty. Sorry if it's broke. You're just an idiot for adjusting the screws that are meant to adjust things."

Just a follow up here...

I finally got time to swap out carburetors and here's what I found wrong with the "Griffin" carburetor. Now at this point, all I've done is remove the air horn to do an inspection. I'm not going to do a complete tear down just yet. I may wind up just using this carburetor for parts or I may slap an air horn gasket back on and set it up correctly.

1) The float pin came out and the float was flopping around not doing much to control fuel flow. The strange thing is the fuel level in the sight window was perfect while it was running. So I was a bit surprised to see that.

2) The metering rod assembly was bent and needed adjustment. It would get hung up often.

3) There was no fuel filter screen installed for the needle seat. Nor was there a gasket on the needle seat. The needle was also too small for the seat. I replaced it with a used one that fit.

4) Air horn screws were severely over tightened. It's a good thing I didn't wait several years to tear this carburetor down because I barely got them to break loose.

5) The casting is pretty rough, unfinished, and it looks like someone took a small hammer to the mating surfaces in different places.

6) The O-ring for the FC solenoid was missing.

Oh dear......

That sounds like a high quality carburetor you got..........

I was considering getting one of these carburetors, just to see how well (or poorly) they were made. Now I don't have to.

For the price, I shouldn't be too surprised.

I'm not really quite sure what to think. There are some people who seem to have good luck with these. But whoever tried to put this one together either didn't know what they were doing or didn't care. But they are certainly built cheap! So there's probably more floating around like this one. Buyer beware...
