It's been a pretty mild Feb. in NW Wyoming as far as snow goes. I passed on snowmobiling in the mountains today for a solo drive out in the desert. Nothing technical or even very challenging, but lots of mud, snow and clear skies. Thought I'd share a few pics from my corner of the world -

Nice shots, K.C. Can't say I recall seing any Wyoming trip reports previously, so the diversity is welcome. The horseback rider one is certainly unique, too. Cool shot. The area looks fairly remote. What is the nearest town?

Ah man K.C., you are giving me the wanderlust something awful! I viewed these and Darren's Dune pictures in the same morning and my dissatisfaction with the flatlands is complete! My wife and I are looking forward to our mountain excursion in the late summer.

Where exatly were you in WY? I lived in Riverton/Thermopolis for 5 months...oh how I don't miss it.

 

Glad you all enjoyed the pics. It was great day with perfect weather.

I wish I could've gotten a better pic of the folks on horseback, but they just popped up on the horizon and dropped down again before I could get a really good shot of them. It was just one of those unique things you see out on the trail.

I live in Lander, which sits at the base of the Wind River Mountains. It's about a 10 minute drive from my house to get out in the middle of nowhere. Those pics were taken in the desert, east and southeast of Lander and Riverton, off rt. 135.



This is a very unique area where the northern edge of the Red Desert meets mountains over 13,000 ft in elevation. There are miles and miles of 2 track trails out in the desert with the Wind Rivers in view the whole time. You can actually drive the entire 150 miles from Riverton to Casper on 4WD trails in the desert.

There are several spots where a locker and winch would come into play. I also like to get up top, where I can see the trail laid out far in front of me and open it up for a little prerunner action. Overall it's a great area with a lot to offer and it will take me years to see all of it.

It may not be sexy like Johnson Valley, Pritchett Canyon, Attica or Tellico. But it's free, the views are amazing and you can ride for hours and never see another vehicle. And I'm so lucky that it's all practically in my backyard.

 

Wow. That's so crazy. I just left Riverton in December. I wish we could have met up while I was there. I was ALWAYS in Lander.

Edit: Is your t-100 black? There's a *really* nice lifted black T in Lander.....

That looks almost EXACTLY like the area where we hunt speedgoats, minus the high mountains, but the terrain and (judging by what's sticking to your tires) the soil and clay-based sunburnt rock is exactly the same. Sticky mud, man! Things can get surprisingly dicey surprisingly fast when weather happens above freezing.

For us forest-loving high country types it can get to be a lonesome open feeling. But lay on your stomach with a 300WSM and field glasses, watching a herd of antelope at 700 yds (just beyond an ethical shot), for the better part of the day, feeling the wind, smelling the sage, avoiding the cactus-knee trick, letting the blue sky soak in, and somehow something bound up inside just starts to unroll, spread out and take in air.

You come back different.

Ive always wanted to do some wheeling in wyoming for just that reason.

There are actually 2 lifted black T100's in Lander, but sadly neither is mine. They are both nice and fairly easy to distinguish. One tossed the tailgate and has a big black toolbox mounted on the end of his bed instead. He is riding on 35" MTR's.

The other black T100 rides on 33" BFG AT's and he has painted the hubs, receiver hitch, wiper blades and his headache rack neon green.... He's a friend of mine and he runs it all over the desert but you always know it's him comin' down the road.

Gapguy, was the picture of your 4Runner that made the calender taken around Boysen? The area looks kind of familiar.

The pic of my truck that made it into the calendar was taken in Salt Lake City..I did enter some from the Boysen area, yes...right before the canyon going towards Thermop and up the mountain.
