Roadtrippin' Through Baja

This past August me and my two best buddies took a month off and went for a drive. Our final destination was to be Los Cabos, Baja California Sur. We planned on stopping at every decent surf spot along the way. Our mission was to stay off the beaten path and find isolation.

Here's a few pictures which outline our journey. Sorry, I didn't drive my 4Runner..or a Toyota... But a 2wd Dodge Ram Van 3500.

Avg Weather: 100-110F (Dry Heat)
Avg Water Temp: 85F
Avg MPG: 16
Avg Beer Consumption: 6/day
Avg Tequila Consumption: Can't remember

The trans peninsular Hwy in Baja runs from Tijuana to Los Cabos, however zig zag's its way across from the Pacific to the Sea of Cortez several times. We took 2 weeks driving down and 1 week driving back. Camping for an extended period of time in the heat is extremely tough.

The Vehicle:

Our first hotel stop:

Catavina Desert (Boojums are in the foreground)

First sight of water (Sea of Cortez) after about 8-10 hours of desert

A little cove in Bahia De Conception. The air was easily 115F and water was in the mid 90's. We proceeded to drink beer while floating in the bathtub.

Our First Campsite. Pacific side. Good waves. And best of all: SHADE!

Blue Egret at Sunset:

Back to Cortez side. This is Bahia Balandra near La Paz. Very crowded but beautiful anyways.

Visiting the "secret" beaches of the Los Cabos area. This one tells a story.

No one around for miles....

Back to the Pacific Side...Got more waves

Los Coyotes. A medium sized fishing village on the Cortez.

Don't hit the bottom!

San Ignacio Desert

Where's this road go anyways?

Mandatory Foot on Hood shot?

Thanks for looking

Yeah it was a great experience! We were lucky to get a month off. I am a full time student and my buddy had just finished nursing school so we went for it.

Yes, Baja was a ghost town, in the way of tourists. Cabo was bumpin' still. But, in general there wasn't many Americans there. People are freaked out about the whole violence problem... Of course Baja is a huge place, and the only real problems reside in Tijuana.

Baja is just as beautiful and great as its ever been! If you've got a chance, I highly recommend it for some exploration.

Here's a surf pic for you. Me on a nice right

A month in Mexico- that is the life indeed. Looks like you guys had an epic time. I have a feeling there are pictures and stories that will never make it here, but I can only imagine. That surf pic is plain awesome.
I dig the EXPO rig.
