A Jeep and an Explorer tore up the sands up northern California beaches this weekend in search of sand and water.... but what we found was mud, rock, sand, salt water, fresh water and a bit of pavement.
Friday we left the bay area and headed north to meet with our other vehicle in Santa Rosa. Dodging some 101 traffic, we wound through the back roads of Santa Rosa and then jumped back on 101 to meet 128. Weaving in and out of amazing redwoods, 128 took us out to Highway 1. Friday we setup camp and met some of my friends and my sister who were scuba diving in Albion. Saturday we started early and headed farther north on Highway 1 and met Road 431. This took us out to the black sand beach. Here we flexed the Jeep and got the Explorers motor wet. After determining that no damage was done (and pulling it out of the surf) we headed back down Hwy 1.
Sunday morning the Explorer parted ways with us. My buddy and I in the jeep went in to Fort Bragg and then hung a right on Oak St until it turned into dirt. This took us all the way to Willits! Lots of hardcore trails leave this but without another vehicle with us, all we could do was walk portions. Upon entering Willits, we swung right back around and took Hwy 20 back to Fort Bragg where we again drove onto the beach (not the black sands though) and proceeded to have a bonfire and make some grub. We headed home around 9:30pm.
It was a wide variety of terrain and when wet, I can see that this area could be even more fun!
