Baja Excursion 2009/10 - 1000 miles Round trip

My own version of the Baja 1000. Except, this is truly in Baja time...no time limits here! The trip is roughly 800 miles of paved road, and 100 miles of dirt. Depending on the weather, the dirt will offer a lot of very challenging obstacles: Several water crossings, river crossings, 2 mile wide mud bogs, estuaries, slippery cobblestones, etc. This year was very dry and uneventful.

I have done this trip with my dad since I was about 8. Him and his buddies had been driving the entire length of Baja before there was even an paved road. Thats roughly 2500 miles dirt, and when Cabo was just a harbor with a fish taco stand. We do this purely for the love of being on your own, and getting perfect surf. Up until recently these spots were not visited by many. The nearest gas station is about 150 miles away. Its a trip I look forward to every year, and even with the troubles of Mexico as of late, go for it anyways.

Man I've been wanting to do this for a while now but the way things are going in Mex. right now I'm second guessing going. I can't even go visit my relatives anymore in Durango because of it. We use to go every year. Oh well. Looks like you had a blast! Any more pictures?

Yeah its pretty sketchy, but once you pass TJ (or Juarez on Mainland) I think its pretty smooth sailing. I've gone into Baja bout 10-15 times since all the violence happened and most the people seem unaffected by it outside of the border towns.

Yes, I have about 100 surfing pictures but I dont think many are that into surfing here

Those are some beautiful shots. Do you have any pics of all the rigs that went? or were there no others?

Thanks guys! I actually had a hard time this year with photos. The lighting was always wrong so a lot came out a little washed out. But, you get the idea! Thanks.

If anyone is ever interested in doing it, I would definitely go for it. Its my favorite place in the world. You can be so far away from civilization, under the bright desert sky, and near the ocean all at once. The fishing is good, and you can hike for miles without ever seeing another footprint.

Yes, my friend with a Tundra came along. Since there was no rain we thought he would be OK, even as 2wd. I brought a tow rope and my bag of rescue goodies.

I'll post some more photos here soon...

That looked like it was a blast, and the surfing looked amazing. Need to talk the wife into that one for the future.
