Exposing the 18' myth for coax
He is referring of course to Firestiks FAQ on their website.

Interesting points he brings up.
I need to buy a new coax, as I had to cut my other one today while taking off the ARB bumper.
Although his site is mainly about Jeep stuff, he has some pretty good tips if you look at his links.
One is a remote incab winch control.

More food for thought:
http://www.signalengineering.com/ult...ax_basics.html
particularly the section: Why does my coax length affect the SWR of my antenna?
This is a particularly easy-to-digest summary of the coax length arguments floating around various boards.
The soldering instructions are pretty good, too. They make for a nice refresher if you haven't soldered in a while.
One thing about the 108" whip that the author of the above link on myths didn't note that most whips are actually 102". The other 6" comes from the spring mount (in most cases).

Both are good articles with only minor inaccuracies.
I've been refering people to the Signal Engineering page for years while fighting this myth myself.
Another myth related to the 18' coax is what to do with the excess. Coil it up or not, big coil or little coil. It doesn't matter.
