Mounting door speakers?

Ok, i picked up some 6.5" speakers for a great deal locally, and now i want to put them in my truck in the doors. I searched and found a few installations in the door panels, but my question is do they mount to the metal of the door, or to the door panel itself? The speakers are not very deep, and they fit in the opening no problem (i have the vent windows, so the big window does not interfere).

See my audio link in my sig below.

On that page is a link to my door pods for my '91 4Runner, same doors as yours basicaly.

This will allow you to put in a deep 6.5" speaker.

For ease you can just mount em to the panel...

I've had mive this way on my beater for 3years no probs...run a cover though or you'll end up kickin them all the time...I found this out the hard way on my MB quarts

Corey, your setup is kinda cool, but for one thing i do not have the same panels as you (mine are the non-power option panels, they wont stay that way as i am putting the power-option panels on when i put the power locks and windows in), and also, i would rather have the look like the picture below.

And, yeah i have the grilles, i just dont know if i should mount it to the panel or metal. I dont know if the wafer-board (sp?) of the door panel is strong enough, and would not end up causing annoying vibrations. The metal is not flat, so it would end up sitting the speaker at an angle, and also set back a bit into the door behind the panel, and then i would also have to mount the grilles to the panel seperatly.

Any other new door speaker installs? Im planning on some 6.5s in my 94 and am looking for all the ideas I can get......and yes I have searched and seen Coreys and a few others. Just wondered if anything new had been done.

I'd say skip the door panels and run Q-Logic kick panels:

Good idea, but dont think those will work with a 5 speed. If I had an automatic and they weren't too pricey, Id definitely consider them.

Are you thinking about issues getting to the clutch?? I dun't tink they stick out that far.

Price wise, they're about $125 new, but the sound difference is incredible.

I think they could work, but i think it would be pretty tight down there. If you look at the link you had, the model for 2nd gen 4runners sticks out a pretty good way....and with me working construction for the time and getting in and out with muddy boots I dont think it would work.
They are a good idea though and a decent price.
I had actually looked into them a few years ago but the only dealer that actually had them brought up the clutch problem.

s wall,

yes, q logics work with 5 speeds. the only adjustment i had to make was not having the foot rest anymore. was it a good trade off for the improvement in my stereo system and my driving enjoyment? yeah, you betcha!

check out my complete writeup on installing a component system w/ an amp and sub too http://www.4runners.org/articles/stereo
