Ok, right now I power my ipod using the power outlets on the dash, which has the expected engine whine/static. I bought the parts to make an in dash USB power outlet. Where is a good place in cab to hook the ipod power connection to? I was thinking of the stereo power wires, would that eliminate the power noise? I really don't want to run new wires through the firewall if I can help it.

Some other people recommended a ground loop isolator, I just wanted to see what YT had to say!

BTW, the sound only happens when it is plugged in and playing through the stereo. If I hook up headphones to the ipod the noise disappears. (I made a custom harness that has power and line out from the ipod and it connects to the dock connector, so the noise is coming out of the line out only, not the headphone jack, like I said before the noise disappears when I unplug the usb power from the cig outlet)

I cannot answer your question about where to hook up to a clean power source for certain but it hooked up my CB to one of my 3 front cigarrette lighter outlets and it sounds fine. So maybe it is the type of connection socket instead of a direct wiring.

I bought the Alpine Ipod/MP3 stereo head unit that controls all functions of the ipod directly through the stereo head unit and I really like it. I have a ipod connection in the glove box and I just leave the ipod connected to it locked in the glove box. No recharging needed. I can scroll through all the playlists, artists or albums without touching the ipod.

It's the best solution for me since I can also hook up my laptop. Until someone comes out with a unit like coastaletech is promising, I will keep using this. I guess one of these days I can park in the garage I will see if I can fix the noise, I need to zip tie some wires and install a connector behind the nav anyways.

You should try a ground loop isolator first. 90% of the time it gets rid of the engine noise. The shop I work at sells them for about $20 and some shops will let you plug one in first to see if it gets rid of your problem. And they also sell cords for the ipod that gives you audio out and allows you to charge it in you car.
