Do I need 3 pre-amp outputs?

I am going to buy a new CD player for my truck ('00 4runner SR5). I am most likely going to go with an Alpine unit. My question is do I need 3 outputs or will 2 be sufficient. The most modding to the stereo I imagine doing in the future is probably new mids in front and a basslink. Thanks -James

It's according on what the preamp outputs are. You'll want a sub output aka non-fading, and a front output. If you plan to adjust your front/rear fade (make the fronts louder than the rears and vice/versa) then you'll need a rear output also.

edit: and that's only if you amp the front and rears. If you plan to run them all off of the deck then you wont need to worry about front/rear outputs, but if you plan to run the mids/highs off of an amp then what I typed above applies.

Nice choice, Alpines have great sound quality. Which model did you go with?

CDA 9856. Nothing spectacular by Alpine standards, but it seems to have all the options I'll ever need.

It's pretty nice. Once you get it in give your review on it, i've been considering getting a new head unit cause mine skips more than a 3rd grade school girl when i'm driving around here. Half the roads I drive on are gravel so yea...

I would absolutely recommend this unit for the $$. I compared it to the Alpine which is a step up (plus $150) and other than a semi-colored display there seems to be very few differences. You can't really read the buttons on the headunit but it takes all of 2 minutes to learn where everything is.
