I am starting this thread to document and track my engine swap from a 22R to a Ford 302 "5.0" V8. I bought a 1995 F-150 with the 302 in it, 122k & automatic trans. The truck was totaled, so I got it for cheap. My budget for this build is $500. The only way I am going to get near that final $ is to part out the Ford and all of my Toyota parts that I don't use, make everything I can myself and somehow avoid the temptation to throw the go-fast goodies at it.

Along the way, I am going to be doing some basic resto to the truck. It is in dire need of a freshen-up. I am not going to include the cost for these parts in my budget unless they are necessary b/c of the swap.

My original set of pictures from earlier in the week were deleted off the camera somehow so I had to take some more today, even though more has been done.

My BIL came over today to help me pull the motor. I had it "all" prepped, so it only took a couple hours to get it out. By "all", I mean all except for the reverse sensor for the backup lights and the trans mount. Unfortunately, I only remembered the reverse sensor once the tranny had dropped and ripped the wires out. Looks like an easy fix. Anyway, here's pics:

the only neg thing i have to say(sorry) is ditch the fram fitlers, they are hardcore crap.

is there any reason you didnt use a 350 from a chevy?

probably gas... the 302 is MUCH better on gas. the 350 has lots of power, but suffers in fuel economy. plus with the 350 ud have to reinforce the frame and all that good stuff. i dont think you would have to with a 302

good point i was just wondering if it was more difficult to swap the 350, the reason i asked is because i owned a 90 mustang gt with a 302 and a 91 z28 with the 350tpi, and i thought the 350 was way more powerful and just a better engine. either way the little truck is going to be fast with a 302, cant wait to see it run. good luck supra89t

if i was gonna get creative, id put the engine in the bed and make it able to pop wheelies. cops would sure LOVE that! ok you know the 350 right.. imagine dropping that into a little engine compartment compared to a 302... tell me.. whats easier.... lmao. yeah good luck with that drop, post pics throughout it and cant wait to see it.. let us know if the ford engine runs any better

yeah I know they are junk. A buddy borrowed it for a few mos and put that on.

As for the 302 vs 350, the ford is a little smaller and lighter and the dist is at the front of the motor. It seems like this is an easier swap than the chevy, too. I guess I will find out! I have acouple buddies who are really in to mustangs so that will be a great resource during the build.

Man, can't wait to see how it turns out. I have a '90 yota 4x4 and I am going to start the same swap shortly. I have been collecting parts for the last several months. I have an inerceptor motor out of a 1990 police crown vic that I'm putting in mine(minus the fuel injection). Keep up the posting so I can learn from your mistakes, lol.

looks like it should clear the front crossmember and the steering tierods but you might have to sacrifice the swaybar

That oilpan would prob work, but NWOR wants almost $500 for it.

That truck is cool. I wish I could find out what motormounts he used. I think the right mounts will put the motor far enough back that the rad support won't be a problem.

No real updates as of yet. I pulled all the emissions control stuff, ignition coil and steering box out this weekend. I need to rebuild steering box as it leaks really badly. I am going to start cleaning and painting for now, until I get to put the Ford on a lift and strip it.

Got the Ford to the house. Pulled basically the front clip off and am in the process of parting it out to fund the Toyota. Pics as soon as I can.
