hello there i like to build a cage around my truck what size of pipe would you use and were would you get at.

first off, you don't want to use pipe. you want to use round tube if you're going to build any sort of roll cage. there is a difference. You want either HREW (budget) or DOM (less likely to dent)

as far as size. 1.5 x .120 wall seems fairly popular, and seems to hold up well.

you can find it at you're local metal supply. or online some places (ruffstuff)

`sorry guys you got to start sometime just because you have not done nothing before dosnt mean you can`t start now you got learn some how , i went to the metal shop yesterday and they said that 1.5 x1.20 is $6.07 a foot . and that is in INdiana i found me jd squared model 32 tubing bendner mannul . used one $250.00 thanks for the info

see, the thing is that learning is great and all, but taking chances with something that you rely on to keep safe isn't a good idea. if it were something like a center console or spare tire mount, i doubt people would give you as hard of a time. just stay safe, and learn on non-critical items

so you would start with something that can potentially kill you or a passenger if done wrong if you're in a rollover rather then do something smaller like irab88 said and learn how to bend, weld, and notch tube correctly?

Most people don`t really know there is a difference throw in some EMT and it really gets tricky.

Steel supplier some how things got put in the wrong rack and shipped to customers thank goodness it was caught before lots of blood was spilled.

I would use pipe as my first choice to build a cage around a vehicle if I was trying to keep it from running off.

Now for parking on other then the tires in a rather abrupt fashion one should go with whatever is in the rule book .

Then the best moly tubing if prepped or welded improper one may as well use plastic pipe.

As one who deals with pipe and tubing every day in one capacity or another, pipe is not meant to be a structural entity like tubing.

Use tubing, not pipe.

I'm not going to tell you not to do it. I would highly suggest practicing on some of the material you are going to use. It is not cheap but for experience it should be a pretty cheap education. Practice notching and welding two tubes together. Then when you get ok with that try and destroy your work see if your welds hold and such. We all got to learn sometime. But jumping in to a structuraly bearng cage is a little bit straight in to the deep end not wrong just risky. Read read read. See the price difference between if someone sells precut cages vs you go to your local supply house. making bends is tougher than it looks with you not kinking the tube. I used to lay 1 1/2 & 2" ridged steel conduits in the ground and just putting a 10 deg bend in it was brutal with out a hydraulic bender. Take you time and if your goin to do it just practice first.

If your nice someone close to you might let you have left overs from those days they measured once and cut 3 times for practice .

You need to do some practice coupons and set the welder just perfect
