Just wondering how much a 300-400 lb load in the back of stock 96 4runner
would affect its off-road capabilies.
Would hd aftermarket rear springs suffice or replacing shocks would also be a good idea?
Also, in terms of cost and complexity, how much more involved is a body
lift than just new shocks and springs?

You can do a small body lift with little or no modifications. It won't add any extra ability off-road or load capacity. Shocks and springs are more spendy and more complex installing. HD AM springs in the rear would make it perform better off-road, with that much weight added. I would recommend some AM shocks to compliment the lift of lift springs.

and not worry about lifting the truck.

I still recommend some good shocks, too. They should handle that type of load more effectively.

300-400 lb load will sag the springs. you may want to get new springs, with that rear shocks.

I've been considering air bags that go inside the springs. Several people on here have them. They run about 80 bucks and you can keep them soft until you carry a load.

Thanks Erich, air bags are an interesing proposition.
Dont knopw much abut them yet, but something that
will allow for more or less stock look while not in use, but will also
improve off road capability when needed, sounds good.
I'll do research on them!
