Question Gear Ratio and Tacoma E-Locker - Can I use one from a Tacoma?

I spoke to a person at Toyota and gave him my VIN number so I could find out what my gear ratio is and he was no help. He had mentioned an Axle Code or specs on the inside of my door but I didn't see anything there.

Here are my questions:

• How do i find out what my gear ratio is on my 4Runner?
• Will an E-Locker from a Tacoma (same generation 96-2002) fit on my 4Runner?
• If I am not re-gearing, does it make a difference with the parts that come with the E-Locker?

Thanks,
John

The non E-locked Taco's and Third Gen Runners used a different housing and 8.4" ring/pinion than those equiped w/ the E-Locker. The E-locker is based on the "old" 8" ring/pinion and housing, so you'd have to swap out the whole axle. ARB makes a locker for the Taco housing- it would be cheaper to put it in than buying an entire axle.

All 3rd Gen runners have V-6 8" rear axles, e-locker or not.

Non-TRd Taco's with open diffs get the 8.4" along with some T-100's, the Tundra and the Sequoia.

With housing mods that can be found with the green button, you can put an e-locker from a Taco in your rear end.

You should have a door jamb code that is referencable to charts in the search. Tentatively, V-6 autos with 16" wheels will have 4.30's while the sticks will have 4.10's.

If the axle code is not listed on the doorjamb, then it should be on the placard on your firewall.
