Import Mechanic in the Orange Cty. Area

My GF's mom (Irvine) is being taken for a ride. She's got a 98 Civic and just got quoted $1200 for new rotors and a starter. Whooaa! I'd my mechanic. So. . . he's cut. Anyone know of a good establishment for her to take her car? I'd appreciate any help on this issue. I've been out of the area for quite some time and lost most of my contacts.

Side note. . . as far as the starter goes, I havent checked out OEM pricing but wouldn't an alternative be to get a dismantlers starter and a rebuild kit (assuming they offer it like toyota) and have me fix the thing? If she's lucky, a meager($20??) core fee?

Any help is appreciated, she's getting taken advantage of pretty badly.

TIA

holy SH&%! I used to live in Irvine, and all the mechanics I could find were crooks too!
The ignition system went out on my fiance's car, and she took it in. They were gonna charge $1500 to replace spark plugs, wires, and ignition coils! The rear plugs are hard to get to, and this place was gonna remove the whole intake manifold to do so! I unbolted the wipers and cover, and did it in about 2 hours, for about $300 total

Hungry,

My mechanic is top notch. I have a '98 Civic as well and I do not go to anybody but him. The name of the place is Swedish Asian Auto Service. They service Volvos, and many Japanese cars. My mechanic has been in the business 20+ years and he is great. Find them on the web and give them a call. Contact John or Tim. Plus they will take you to work as long as it is not too far. They are not open on weekends though. My co worker referred me to him. Basically, what sold me was this abridged story:

Co worker had ignition problems in his toy pickup and he went camping with wife. Car broke down in desert in middle of nowhere. He called mechanic. Mechanic had tow truck come and tow to So Cal. And he put my co-worker and wife in a hotel. Mechanic paid for tow, hotel, car rental and fixed the problem. He did not fork out a dime. Mechanic put everything on his own credit card.

Good luck,

Ken

When I had my honda's I used to take it to this small honda shop. They're a real small shop but they do quality wotk. They don't overprice and they take great care of their customers

I'd recommend them no questions asked:

New Tech Car Specialist
9237 Lower Azusa Rd #K
Temple City CA 91780
(626) 292-1472

I know you requested OC but this is located near the 10 and Rosemead. It's abit out of the way from ya but I thought I'd chime in

Lance,

Cool! My friend who lives in Alhambra was looking for a good local mechanic for his two Nissans. Will they fix non-Honda vehicles like Toyotas and Nissans?

Just spoke to Steve at Swedish Asian Auto Service. Seemed like a nice, staight-forward guy. I dropped your name (maybe your next oil chg will be free ) and they quoted me $600 less than the shister that she had taken it to before. I guess what goes around comes around. Good thing the dude lives far away from me.
Thanks Ken. Nice rec.

Bob unfortunately they don't do anything but Hondas/Acuras. But I do take my 4runner in when I'm lazy to do a quick oil change though I just bring my own filter. Aside from that, they won't do anything major.

something on a side note:

where do ya guys take your yotas in the LA/OC area? Got any recommendations? Sometimes I'm abit lazy to do my own stuff and would be nice to fall back on someone reliable. Stealers are good but they're sooo expensive

Hungry,

No problem. I F*ing hate getting screwed and I do not like it when others get screwed, so I am glad that I could help. When I get my 4runner, guess where I will be going to get it serviced.....

The best thing to get is a good, honest mechanic. Imagine going to a place over and over and getting screwed over and over. (I am talking about a shady mechanic you sickos). But seriously, ~$600 compared to 1200 is a HUGE difference. Most, if not all, of those dudes at SAAS are nice and pretty knowledgeable. John has been a Toyota mechanic for 15+ years. SCORE for me when I get my truck!!

Wow, they sound like a pretty good place to go to! I think I might go by there next time I need my truck serviced! And they're only like 10 minutes from me
