If you plan on doing a motor swap you have a choice of a couple motor options. My favorite lately is a TDI engine from a 1997-2006 Jetta or Golf. Great MPG and about double the HP and torque from the 4 cylinder. I am gonna start building these in my spare time.

From the sounds of it I would suggest getting a Factory Service manual or a Haynes Repair manual and follow the instructions.
Regarding the motor... there is a place to get a slightly modified version of the 22re

It would be way better getting their gear instead of spending 3k on a short block from a standard rebuild shop. Just another thought that I Forgot about last time. In the end i would still do the TDI swap personally.. but thats just me
