i'd think twice before buying a rig with that much milage unless I was completely sure that is was maintained and not driven to the ground. Shop around and look in the newspaper, I think you can find something better that. On the other hand 136k miles on a toyota is not that bad if you think about it on the long run.

When I bought my '91 4Runner it had close to 150k miles on it, so I wouldn't be too worried about 136k miles. And to me $10000 doesn't seem that bad to me for a '97 4x4; although the mileage seems a bit high for a '97, but like WATRD and ben95m said, it's a Toyota... 136k is barely broken in
I personally would go and check it out (if it's local) and if it's in good condition I would try and talk the price down, because it sounds like a good deal to me

Check it out!!
I would check the condition and all the options and go to kelly blue book on the net and get a value for wholesale and retail. Look it over good before hand so you will be able to answer all the questions on the blue book site. This will give you a good idea what its worth. Try offering the wholesale price first and work from there. JMO

Break it down and it comes out to about 63 miles a day.
I do that every day commuting to work.
I'm still running strong at 193,000 miles.
If its in good shape and maintained, i would take it.

drive it and check the records
Hell, I bought mine at 99k - it has been maintained like a church (catholic, that is! LOL!)
Check it out throughly. Then again. Then have your mechanic check it. Then you check it again. Run CarFax.
I almost bought a '99 from a TOY dealership w/ 130k on it. It was a one owner, and had records from 0 miles- it was beautiful...but the '98 I own had less miles and was more what I wanted. (insert spinal tap accent: "the answer is none more black")
I say check it out and go for it!

not offense, but if it was a domestic model, then i would pass on it. since it's a toyota, then i would buy it especially if you can bring the price down a little.
i bought my 96 4runner with 120k miles on it and i'm the 3rd owner (1st - lease owner 30k, 2nd - sales person 90k). after 5k miles, everything is running strong.

Are you financing or paying cash?$10,000 is alot of jack.I don't really care but keep in mind if you are financing you want it to last as long as you financed it for.(hate to have a car payment & repair bill)136,000 is alot of miles for some cars and I know for a Toyota that isn't much but I'm starting to have problem's with my 92 and it only has 128,300 miles and it was well maintained I know I had it since 92.

Go for it. My sister just bought a 91 with 190,000 and it still runs great. We had toyota check it out and run a compression check. And even after all those miles it was still running a strong 130 per cylinder.
It's Toyota 136K is nothing.

When I was looking for a 4Runner, I saw lots of abused vehicles that were going for way too much money. Then I came across mine. It had 113,000 miles on it which was much more than what I had been looking at BUT it was almost half as much in price. Also, it was in the best condition out of all the trucks I had looked at. The dealer let me take it by myself for a few hours at a time. I tore the thing apart looking for any evidence of abuse or neglect and found nothing. It looked new inside and out. So this was my rational: I want to mod this truck. What makes more sense? Get one with low miles, spend more $,and then spend even more upgrading a perfectly good suspension and other parts...OR buy one with higher mileage for a lot less money and upgrade parts that are worn anyways. I chose the latter and I have no regrets. I change my oil after 3000 miles and I am amazed at how clean it still is. This tells me that this is one hell of an engine and it will go for a long time. Just my .02

High Milage?
I have 223,000 miles on my 1998 4-runner. I plan on taking it up to 400,ooo on the original engine. I run castrol syntec and faithfully change the oil. It runs great and will continue for a long time. Roman

Got mine from the TRADER!
yeah, i think thats one of the better chances you have at getting a 3rd gen at that price, but of course everything is dependent upon the condition of the truck.
i paid $8500 for my '96 with 150k. exterior is in excellent condition with the int. being good. so far ive had zero problems since i bought it in january and still loving it to death.

i just went and checked it out, and i wont be buying that car.
engine was filthy
he had 3 brand new tires on there and one old one, i didnt bother to ask why
his interior was literally falling appart... the center kick pannel was missing the screws and was literally falling off.
it had some fake wood interior (aftermarket) and it was fadding and worn
i just wasnt impressed at all, i couldnt see myself driving that truck
now i know why i'm asking so high of a price for my truck.. because it's that one truck with no problems and super clean
I'm starting to think just keep my truck till i go in the marine corps (october 14th) and sell it right before. once i come back from boot camp, use the money i make there and just slap down a huge down payment on a new(er) one, like a 2002

No, any vehicle with 100K miles and over is a crap shoot. I would recommend locating a vehicle with <75K miles and fit the additional expense into your budget. Financing an additional $5000 is not that much more monthly. Worst case scenario would be you purchase the 136K mile vehicle and rebuild the tranny, engine, timing chain and perhaps other drive components. Not to mention new tires, alignment, etc. those ancillatory charges will probably add up to $5000. I know Toyota is built for the long haul, but 136K is getting to the point of major replacement/repair for the wearable items on the vehicle.
