Timing Guide Bolt stuck in block
Been lurking for a while because the "search" feature answered all of my questions, but here is a doozy. When replacing the timing chain guides on my 90 4Runner 22RE, the top bolt on the drivers side guide broke off in the block. (Appears to be a defective bolt) Anyhow, I tried using a reverse bit to back it out, but it just keeps getting shavings everywhere, and now I am all the way through the bolt, and I am afraid of going into the block. The bolt is too far "out" to get another bolt in on top of it and tighten down the guide, and it is too far in to really get any other tools other than the drill bit in there.
My options: Two mechanics have said just tighten down the lower bolt, and the timing cover will hold the guide in place, and there isn't anything to worry about - one said to put some JB Weld on the block/guide in that area. Or, I can drill out the entire bolt, have it rethreaded and try again...What is the best option?
Many thanks.

Drill it out with a bit that is slightly smaller then the narrowest part of the bolt (ie between threads, Then retap the hole. It will take a while so take your time. If you screw up the drilling or tapping you can always go to the next size of bolt and start the whole process again. I would definatly fix it when it is the guide, they can take a lot of pressure and you don't want it to move and jump the chain (could end up taking out valves).

drill and retap, shouldn't be a big deal.
now a head bolt on the other hand, those aren't much fun. i snapped one off when doing my timing chain, luckily it broke just under the top of the rocker assembly. thank god for craftsman bolt-outs...
