Question A/T light on again

My '91 4runner has been getting the A/T light on after driving 65mph for just a few minutes. Goes out immediatly after shutting engine off and restarting. I had the transmission flushed a few weeks ago and they over filled it by 1 1/2 quarts. Im running 33x12x15's. I also just replaced the radiator. Any body got any ideas? The tranny seems to be slipping when the light is on. Around town ...no problem.

From what I've read/heard, overfilling an auto tranny is one of the worst things you can do to it. Get rid of that extra oil and more than likely, the oil will be able to move more freely allowing it to dissipate more heat.

i thought you were suppose to leave your truck running when when the a/t light comes on, and just idle and wait for it to turn off, thats what i do and i think it says it in the manual, anyway thats just some info. and my light comes on alot now that i have 33's on it also, but only when driving offroad.

Are you driving on grades that cause the trans to shift in and out of overdrive? Mine was coming on going up slight grades, so now I shut off the O/D on even slight grades--I also put a trans cooler in.

I already took out 1 1/2 quarts. Still comes on. I think the 33's and no tranny cooler might be the problem. Since I won't give up the tires I'll try the cooler. Any suggestions on which cooler to use?

If your truck doesn't have an auxiliary trans cooler on the passenger side frame rail, you could pick one up at a local salvage yard. My 89 (w/ A340H) came with one from the factory. Dumb question, but the new radiator does have a cooler along the bottom doesn't it?

I ran 33's and 35's for many years on my 4Runner and never had the A/T temp light come on.

I would also suggest watching the O/D light down by the shift lever. If it flashes there could be a problem with a solenoid (fairly common).

PS: I just realized you work for Toyota. Why not pickup a factory cooler at TOD?

The cooler along the frame is a transfer case cooler. I have one. And yes the radiator has a cooler along the bottom but I guess that doesn't mean it works the same as a factory radiator. If the new cooler doesn't fix it Im not sure what I'll do. I've checked with all the Techs here and no ones has any suggestions. I really thought when I found the tranny overfilled that was going to fix it. It didn't. Im still open for suggestion if you have anymore.

Most of us with 2ng gen runners put the cooler behind the skid plate. Look up Robinhood150--I did mine almost the same. I also bent the fins on the skid to let more air in.

I had the same problem on my '94 after the dealer changed the tranny fluid. brought it back and it turns out some trannys are very picky about what fluid is used. The dealer put in Toyota fluid and the light came on. Drained it and put in Mobil ATF and no problems. Go figure! A long shot but you might give it a try.

Talking

Take it back to the folks who supposedly flushed it a few weeks before and make them remedy the problem they caused at their expense OR make them pay for the repairs at the dealer.

Good luck!

Thanks, I'll read his thread. I'll post if it fixes it.

Sorry about the confusion on the transfer cooler. I didn't go look at mine before saying it.

Anyway, as I said last night I ran 33's and 35's for years with 4.10 gears and never had slipping problems on the highway or the A/T temp light turn on. Maybe your problem is related to the new radiator, but maybe there is something else.

I agree with tpg013 to try different trans fluid. It's the easiest thing to do. I think the last time I changed mine that I used some Pennzoil, but I think I have used Valvoline years ago. I have heard through this forum that the Mobil1 works well and improves shifts especially when the fluid is cold.

If changing the fluid doesn't yield an improvement, then try another cooler.
