I used to want to do all infiniti in my Volvo, and looked into it. Don't get the reference if you can. Get the kappas, yes bigger price, but the refrence is coated paper. Yes they will kick the pants out of your stock, but there are much better to be had. I love infiniti and when I finally replace my speakers thats probably what i'm going to use. If you want the cheapest prices, go to mmxpress.com . they are the cheapest place ive found.
Good luck!

Just to let you know, Infinity Kappa's wont' fit very well in 3rd gen 4Runners, while Reference will. Kappa's are too big and deep to mount, and in my case the window wouldn't go all the way down with Kappa's installed.
I currently have 6000cs (6.5" components) in the front and 4002i (4" 2-way) in the rear. Both pairs fit perfectly and sound awesome!

I've got the ref. 6800cs in my '03 tacoma, they are poly cones. They are not exactly bolt in...those front speaker plates in the doors are weird...holes don't line up. I had to 'enlarge' the holes in the infinity speaker baskets to get them in. I think the 6.5's would fit better, with an adapter plate.
Running them off the head unit, better than stock, a lot. Too much treble, though. I had to add attenuation to the tweets. Bass is fine, once you get the tweets toned down...
Good luck,
John

I have the Infinity Reference 6.5" seperates in my rig.
Are these the paper or the better ones?

They were in the rig when I got it November if '98.
Good speakers, and they do crank, but I will replace them one day for something better.

To start Infinity hasn't had a paper coned Reference for at least 3yr's. I have yet to even see a set of the shallow mounts at the shop I work at but I've heard about them. I personally as an installer don't like the way Infinity anything sound (Perfects are ok ), but you'd have to have the same depth as diameter to mount them. Your best bet would be to go to a couple of shops near you and listen to them, granted they won't sound as good in a display booth, as they will in your truck but it'll give you an idea. Bring some of the music that you listen to with you.
If your looking to stay at an intermediate level speaker you may look into MB Quart, Eclipse, Focal (Caution their tweeters are very bright! ), and Alpine would be my choice's over the Infinity Reference, or the Pioneers.
