Me and my friends are spending a day in the garage working on our cars and I decided to try to get my speedo cable lubed. I searched around and really didn't find anything inparticular so I was curious if anyone could give me a quick run down on how to lube it. I can get to it but I dunno what to use to lube it and how I should go about. If someone posted this already somewhere please point me in that direction.

I haven't done this in years (might have been in high school shop).

If you don't have a problem, don't lube it. Use lube sparingly. You remove the center part of the cable. Lightly lube it with correct grease and re-install. Do it from the lower end, too much grease will get into the speedo head, then you're screwed.

Current thought (with the price of labor in a shop) is to just replace it. Bouncing speedo is usually due to some damage on the outer housing anyway, and the labor is about the same, and lubing is not always going to help.

My speedo has bounced for a long time now, and finally the other day it just flat stopped working. I assumed the cable has broken so I picked up a new one at the dealer. Could you explain better why my speedo bounced? Will the new cable fix my problem?

The cable is like a spring. As it binds during rotation, it winds up a little bit (so it is slower than actual speed), then when it releases it spins faster than actual speed.......hense the "bounce" in the needle.

Keep the speedo cable away from exhaust parts and don't make any tight bends or kinks in it. It will be happy!

I just sprayed some pbblast into it and it seems to be fine now. It stopped squealling and bouncing so hopefully it'll be alright. I keep a fire extinguisher and most of my dash is out right now being repainted. So if anything happens I'll just buy a new cable. I just hate having to goto the dealer.
