Should I replace my tranny filter?
Hey all,
I lost quite a bit of tranny fluid while I was replacing my radiator. My original plan to plug up the tranny cooler hoses didn't work that great. Ended up scrambling around and used a couple of plastic bolts.
Anyhow, I lost about 5 quarts of fluid. Should I change my tranny filter now that I will be adding 5 or so quarts of new fluid? The 4Runner has about 168,000 miles on it, and I think the previous owners have had the tranny fluid replaced at least once. The fluid that did come out looks pretty good.
Well, thanks in advance.
Have fun all.

I know that my 4runner is a 4wd, but when I had the transmission serviced they said that it didn't have a filter. They said all it is is a screen that collects any big particles. To clean this they had to drop the transmission pan, but I don't know what else they had to do to clean it.
Also, you might as well drain all your fluid and replace it with new fluid. I talked to a friend of mine that works up at Toyota and he said that they don't have transmissions in 4runners go out very often if the fluid hasn't been changed in a while.
Good Luck

It's easy to do
Just drop the pan. Remove the 3 10mm that hold the filter. Clean it out real good with brake clean. Put it back in. Use a cork gasket that you get from Toyota for the pan. That silicon makes a mess and the cork gasket works great. just make sure you get all the old gasket material off the pan and trans surface where the cork will be touching.

Thanks you all. Been a great help. I'm going to go ahead and do all that today. I bought a kit from Advanced a while ago that includes a cork gasket and a new filter. I recken I'll just plop those in.
Hopefully my transmission won't break down on me with all the new fluid in there.
Thanks again all.
Have fun.
