Opinions needed.. and an explination needed

SO, I'm getting kinda frustrated because it apears as though the 89 Gen 1 4Runner is sort of left out, there's plenty of stuff for the gen 1, but alot of the time when I find pieces for the truck, the model year is always from 85-88, then 90on... is there an interchange issue, will the stuff for IFS gen 1's fit? cause I've njto seen a whole lot of difference between the 88's and 9's...

As for opinions, I know it'd be ideal to have a solid axle rig on 35's (at least IMO) and I've recently made friends with a guy who's pretty well versed in building Toyota's, BUT I don't know that even with the discount in labor and raw materials that he brings if I'll be able to swing the SAS work all at once, and I don't want to do it cheaply, so...

A) is there a decent IFS kit out here for the mean time to get me up over 33's for the winter and the mean time?
OR...
B)Should I just keep the 31x10.50's and get a set of AAL's to fix the sag
OR..
C) Would the Torsion bar adjustment be enough to match a set of 2.5in Lift rear springs and get me over the 33's

BTW let me just say how bloody much this thing has impressed me in the last 8 weeks of owning it... been out to Mt. Hood, and alot of local rural areas, and she's not let me down yet...

Cheers and Thanks

Dave

I'd go the ball joint spacer route so that you won't have to crank the torsion bars as much. That's what I did. I definately have room for 33's. My 31's look pretty tiny right now, can't wait until they wear out!

I'd stay away from the aal if you can afford the lift springs. I had an '86 4runner with a AAL and it rode pretty bouncy, unless you can find a "soft ride" AAL.

cool thanks, this is exactly the type of advice I need... Are the BJ Spacers the ones Rodger Brown makes?

Cheers

the '85-88 stuff is mainly for trucks since they got the newer body style in '89, the only noticable difference in an '89 4runner is if you have the 22R-E. it's the improved version with the TCCS fuel injection and straight intake plenum with less clutter

roger brown doesnt make bj spacers... sdori makes spacers... 4crawler does sell the spacers thogh, hes a vendor as is trdparts4u.com

the ifs runners should be the same no matter what year it is is the same generation well i know the 4x2 pickups are anyways, there were slight changes and body changes, but the 2wd balljoint is the same on the 4x2 from 84-95

Cool, see this was where I knew there was a little glitch cause I know the PU body changed independant of the 4Runner, so all IFS Gen1 4runners should be the same except for the engine then eh?

Will this hamper my ability to run a Snorkel? anybody know...

I think I'll go through Rodger for the Spacers cause he seems to be a really good guy who knows what he's doing eh...

SO I think my plan is then going to be BJ spacers and either a Shackle/AAL rear combo or maybe some Oregon Leafs if they're cost effective for an over all 2-2.5in lift and probably a set of BFG 33x10.50 Mudders on Black Steels... Not too tall, and IMO just a good all around DD/weekend trail rig... Project 4Rescue is getting under way WOO HOO!!!!

Cheers and Thanks

Dave

I have both a 89 and 87 1st gen that i have scrapped. Everything on them is pretty much identical, and most early 90's (90,91,maybe92) 4runners will be interchangeable too. When you start getting into 92 and 93 then stuff starts getting different while remaining the same. For example my 93 alternator looks the same is in the exact same place, has same number of bolts, but they are different; rotors and calipers are different, steering boxes are exactly the same but newer one has 3 teeth on the gear as compared to 4. The newer body style truck (89.5- 91 or 92) is pretty much interchangeable with the 1st gen 4runner.

Thanks man, that's the kind of interchange info I need... I used to build Mopars so I understand that alot of stuff is interchangeable, it's just that almost all companies seem to leave 89 off the list... I figure it's just an oversight so anyway

Cheers

yeah esentially at that point in time your talking about 4 different models ( 1st gen & 2nd gen 4runner, earlier truck, and newer truck) so there is going to be a lot of oversight. Now dont take what i said as the law or anything but for 9 times outta 10 these things should be interchangeable within a few years of your model year.
