When you turn the overdrive off when you engine break does this cause any kind of unnecessary or increased wear on your engine?

I know it consumes more gas but it this typically something I should try to avoid or does it not matter?

Engine braking is perfectly fine, I do it all the time and the engines are designed to do it. I don't think it decreases gas mileage because I don't think the engine injects much, if any, gas. Not too sure about that though.

I had heard, (ages ago), that excessive engine breaking draws oil through the piston rings contributing to premature sealing problems. Has anyone heard of this?

I use my engine breaking occasionally but if ths is true then I'll try not to di it anymore. Does anyone have any more info re this?

After reading some posts here, I have started to use it. I was told it does not hurt at all. It is just like downshifting, that is it. I use it mainly when I have to stop suddenly and also when there is a cop and sudden breaking will alarm them and draw attention to myself. I don't think it hurts at all. But I don't do it often. I mean saving myself from another $120 ticket is worth it! LOL... :fireman:

I had heard that EXCESSIVE engine breaking would cause some problems. I don't know how to define excessive, other than engine breaking at 5000+ RPM for extended periods. Am I the only one who's heard this? Maybe someone was feeding me a line a of BS...

Personally, I flip the OD switch off on long downhills (always under 60 mph) to help disperse the wear and tear on my brakes.
