Hello all,
Need help with possible diagnoses before I go to the mechanic. My 97 4runner (4 wheel drive) has developed a noise that sounds kind of like a cricket. When I depress my clutch, it goes away. When I let it out in gear, it returns. When I start moving from a complete stop, the sound gets faster. It does not seem to be coming from any of the belts or the fan. Any thoughts? Does this have anything to do with the throttle body?

As noted above, I went to the mechanic and my clutch and bearings were damaged. I had my clutch assembly and bearings replaced as well as the flywheel remachined. The 4Runner shifts better than I ever remember it!

All work was done at Protrux in San Marcos (SoCal) for a grand total of 551.00

There's your hint right there.
I have the same thing, it's the throwout bearing on my truck.
Doesn't cause any damage to the truck, just to your brain from it driving you CRAZY!

ok this might be a stupid suggestion, but could it be a rock in between your tires? Cuz that makes a chirping sound as well lol

Thanks Scofco, What does the throw out bearing actually do? It is definitely driving me nuts!

It's more likely a mainshaft bearing .When you push in the clutch the throwout bearing is pushed against the pressure plate and starts spining and if it was worn thats when it would make noise .With the clutch not depressed at idle in nuetral the mainsahft is spinning at engine RPM,and the throwout brg. is not moving.Check your transmission oil level ,it might be low.But it looks like you might be needing some trans. work. :

Mine makes the same noise if that makes you feel any better. I also just had my clutched replaced less than a year ago and the noise is back already. I think I'm going to have to go to Toyota and see what's up, because it's driving me insane. Not to mention I have a heat shield rattle that I still have not pinpointed

Guys,

I had the crickets and the cure was to change out the manual tranny fluid. If you are going to do that, I highly recommend (i mean HIGHLY) Redline MT-90. Do a search and see my as well as other people's threads on the subject.
