Messed up spring
Has anyone ever experienced a bent or twisted spring? I purchased a SS #1 kit and while installing it noticed that one of the springs for the front looked warped after install. I called Steve and met with him since he only lives a few miles away. After taking the spring and shock apart and putting it back together twice the problem still existed. Steve said he had never seen anything like it but there was definately something wrong with it. Our joint opinion was that the top plate was bending due to fatigue or rust under the pressure of the spring. So I went ahead and ordered a new top plate from the dealer and had it installed tonight at a cost of $80 for the top plate. The problem still exists though. What is the possibility of the spring being warped from the factory and has anyone else experienced anything like this before. I am curious because everytime I try to do any repairs or installs on a vehicle other then minor maintenance it turns into a nightmare of problems.

I am going to head down to toyota today to see if they will cover it under warranty. I am just wondering if they won't cover it since Steve gave it to me as part of the kit and the product wasn't purchased or installed by them. I guess I will see how it goes. Has anyone else had or seen a twisted or bent spring before.

Tough to get them straight. I tried three times before finally getting mine straight on the plates. The issue is that they are such heavy springs and are compressed so tight on the shock. If you don't use a press to compress them, it is difficult.

I fixed his truck last night. There was nothing wrong with any of the parts, it was installed incorrectly.
If you get a grind/rub noise with the Tundra coils it is an install error, which will most likely occur if you take the shock/strut assembly to a shop to do the compressing without the vehicle present.
As long as you put everything back together exactly as it came apart, you will not have any problems. I have added this one to the documentation that comes with our lift kits.
