How many miles on your 3rd Gen 4runner?

I thought the pricing for the timing belt, etc was pretty good. A local competent mechanic quoted a price of about $600 but I believe that the dealer has more pertinent experience in changing the belts. I also wanted genuine Toyota parts. The tranny flush and fill was a little expensive but the service writer claims that the inside of the tranny is cleaned thoroughly, ALL of the old fluid is removed. They flush it with a machine similar to the "motorvac" machines that flush the engine.

I'm amazed myself haha, it's all regular dealer maintainence with regular 3k oil changes. I guess I really lucked out on this one! The only work I've done recently is on the A/C and I had to replace the ignition cylinder. I'm about to redo the suspension and regear, put it up on 35's.

These 3rd gens hold up really well if properly cared for. The 2 biggest things that take them to their grave early is engine and transmission problems most of which is owner neglect.
People will change their oil every 3K but won't flush their cooling system till it starts to give them problems or look really bad. Once a 5VEFZ has over heated its going to need a heat gasket.
The transmission problems are due to towing in O/D, not changing the fluid regularly and the strawberry milkshake which I file under neglect because a radiator should be replaced every 5-7 years.
Everyone I tell that's not a Toyota owner I have 300K miles on the original engine and transmission with no major service doesn't believe me.

Me too lol, I'm about to hit 374k you would never believe it looking at the engine, or the body. Preventive maintainence!!! We don't stress it enough!

175,000 (175K) miles on it still running good, technically its my little brothers but he doesnt take care of it(hes kind of a little girl). I do all the maintenance on it, because he's still living at home with my parents, with no job, and sits and plays xbox all day. Im the reason its still going. I had to change the all the fluids because it was at 172K without anything changed but the oil. Iknow trust me its horrible. Its kind of sad what Its been through but its still going strong Im suprised the Auto Tranny didnt go out with having the same fluid as when they bought it brand new.
