Gauge and dash backlighting

I'm planning on replacing my stock green backlighting with blue LEDs and I know that there are three #194 lights behind the gauges, but I haven't been able to find how many #74 and/or #194 bulbs I would need to replace for the climate control, shifter, rear window switch, etc... I basically just want to replace all the green with blue. Any help?

I know that a few people have done this mod already and that it is pretty straightforward, and there actually is another older thread dealing with this, but I could not find the exact number of each bulb needed to replace all of them... I really don't want to have to take the dash apart to find out so I can order everything just to take it all apart again, if you know what I mean! But the website to get them from is www.superbrightleds.com , or there is a store on Ebay called VLEDs that I've bought from that is good.

Alright, my patience wore out and I decided to discover for myself how many bulbs there are... There are two #74 in the climate control unit and one in the ignition key ring... I wasn't able to open the actual shifter to see how many were in there, but there is probably an easy way that I missed. The A/C switch has a replaceable bulb in it but it is much smaller than a #74 bulb and I'm not quite sure what it is. Bad news on the power window and ECT PWR switch... It looks like the lights are soldered in, so it could be done, but it's a little much for me.

So altogether it looks like I'm going to get 3 #194 blue LEDs for the gauge cluster and probably 5 #74 (I only counted 3, but I know there are some in the shifter).

It seems your wanting to do the exact same thing as me, I pulled my whole gauge cluster out and couldn't find a way to get to those bulbs without screwing something up. Your better off customizing your own guage at www.speedhut.com As for the A/C control bulbs they are Neo - Wedge LED Instrument Panel Bulbs
http://autolumination.com/74.htm But I'm not sure if they are Type A or B... I've yet to take them out and measure them. Here's my older thread on this exact same topic https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/02-4runner-gauge-bulbs-106658/ Look on my cardomain I've changed out so many bulbs and I can help you if you have any other quesions..

i'll take a closer look at it today but the shifter only has one light. pop up that section of console. if you really want to you can get to it from there, just follow the single wire leading to the middle of the shifter. to make things easier you can unscrew the two screws holding the shifter down and pull it up. you can see where there is a single bulb that goes in straight up, one of the ones you turn clockwise to lock into place....don't know what size it is though so maybe i just wrote all that for no reason

In total I think I used about 9 or 10 #74 bulbs in my mod:

~Key ring
~Ash tray
~Cig Lighter ring
~Trans Light
~Climate Controls
~2 Signal Arrows
~4x4 Light
~ECT Light

I've got a 2002, and have been wanting to change out the green to a red or amber color. I'm wondering how much the light bulbs differ on the climate control lights between 96-98 to 99+ (non-auto CC). You can only get them from the dealership. #74 bulbs are way too big. Plus there are three of them. They do have the little green condoms on them, that I could probably just switch out. But I have no idea where to get these condoms.

Has anyone done this on a 99+?

I pulled the green condoms off of mine one day when I was trying to get them out because I thought they were 74's... Now they have that white/yellow look like stock headlight bulbs..

Alright... after waiting what seemed like forever my bulbs finally came in from SuperBrightLEDs. The install went fairly well, the only obstacles I ran into were first that the #74 bulbs are a little longer than the stock ones, so I actually filed one down to be able to fit it in the ignition ring. Also the cigarette lighter on my 4Runner looks like it has a replaceable bulb, but it would NOT come out! And lastly the climate control lights are still a little "spotty". I filed them down a little, which helped, but didn't entirely fix the problem. I'm thinking that maybe getting the #74 LEDs that VLED's offers that have an inverted cone lens would be better... The gauges look very good and were by far the easiest, and the light is very bright! Much better than green... The only thing left for me is to replace the mini "neo wedge" in the rear window defrost control and the a/c control.

Anyway, I totally dig it, and now it matches my cd player! I'll be sure to post some pics later on today.

I've done the same thing, but I can't figure out how to replace the rear window defrost, a/c control, or clock. Anybody know?
