Door with Yakima Racks LEAKS
Hey gang. i'm sure some of you have yakima rack on your 4runners. Does anyone have trouble with leaking where the racks are anchored? The clip goes over the rubber gasket lining the door and this allows water to seep in through the door jamb. Anyone have this problem? Anyone have any solutions? Let me know!! Thanks

Are you talking about the Q-Towers? My first plan of action would be to make sure they're EXACTLY where Yakima specifies them to be, it's critical. After that, I'd call Yakima.

I had those racks before, I am not a fan. When the clip wraps around the door seal it deforms it there is no way around it, some seal better than others. I replaced those with control tower? it fits in the stock rail of the exploder with a little adapter. My runner does not have those yet, new yakima tracks should be here next week. I kept all the hardware from the exploder, so I should be good to go. I'll maybe post a few pictures when I am done

You need to reposition the q-towers to the exact spot where they are supposed to be as per yakima as said before. Any deviation will lead to what you have now a bad door gasket seal.

Do you have a factory roof rack you can tie into? If not, your only option is to re mount the rack (if it's in the wrong spot). If you don't use the rack on a regular basis, take it off and give the door seals a chance to recover. Yes, I know it's a pain.

You put them over your door seals? When I installed my rack with the Q-towers on my parent's mercury sable I just made little slits in the weather stripping and ran the clips under the stripping. That was about 3 years ago and the 'rents haven't had leaking problems yet. Also, as others said there should be a control tower application for the 4runner that will allow you to affix it to the roof. I know both yakima and rei's websites have the fit guide that will show you all of your options.

I have had Yakima racks on three of my vehicles- that latest being my 91 Toy pickup (I run a shell on back and carry the bikes on top with camping gear in the shell) and have had no trouble. First make sure you have the proper clips. The part number will be on the clip (one or two digit numeral) and verify this on Yak website www.yakima.com If this is correct, make sure you have even pull on each side. If one pulls tighter it can cause abnoraml seal distortion. If you still have trouble, call Yakima. Thier number is on the web and they are pretty helpful. ALso if you have y clips and y towers (older version of the Q tower) they can cross ref the part numbers for you. Good luck.

I just installed the yakima 42" tracks last night, and put my railrider 1 towers on. I'll try to post a pic soon. Scary drilling 10 holes in the roof! but no clips, and I like the adjustability of the tracks. if the cross bars are too far apart you can easily steal skis or snowboards out of a LOCKED ski holder.
I should have put on the 54" tracks, but the yahoo at REI barely understood what I was asking for in the first place, so I measured and thought the 42s were closest to the factory size.
Running boards come off too, 4runner is looking less like a mall car and more like the vehicle it was intended to be
