Has anyone out there converted their 2wd 4runner or tacoma to 4wd? If so, what is involved in doing the conversion? Is it as simple as hooking up a transfer case and doing a SAS on the front? Any info would be great. Thanks

as simple? i wouldnt really call those simple, but depending on how much of the work you can do yourself and if you can find the parts chheeeap your still lookin at the cost of a normal used 4wd 3rd gen... just spitballin but 5-8k

thats not 5-8k, not even close.

all you need is tranny and tcase out of something with the same engine, front diff with the right gear ratio, cv's, manual hub spindles, manual hubs.

thats all you need to do it.

try searching for iceman601's thread.. he converted his 2wd into a 4wd...you'll learn a lot from him. he even made a winch cradle bes able to still use the stock bumper

You are gonna need an axle with a driver side pumpkin..Are you talking about going IFS, SAS with traditional leafs or coils??

thats the mechanical part of it but you would also nned the new interior trim piece in front of the e-brake with the cut-out for the 4x4 shifter, a new instrument cluster with the 4wd indicator in the center, a new ecu? probably other various odds and ends, a new rear driveshaft as well

Seems to me that it would just be easier to find a 4WD rig.

x2 on that. i would jsut buy another one, and use the one you got for a DD and get a older one for wheelin

Its usually just better to buy a 4wd, the swap is not usually cost effective, especially for the older trucks.

He would need the new trim piece and to cut out the floor shifter area.

He doesn't need new instrument cluster, no new ecu... Your running manual hubs, there is no computer for manual hub'd trucks, its all mechanical. You can wire the transfer case switch and route it to a bulb in the 4wd light socket in the instrument cluster. But it would be simpler to just look down, oh i am in 4wd. If you wanted to use ADD you still wouldn't have to deal with that crap, you could just wire up the solenoids to where you controlled there locking and unlocking.
