I was wondering if any of you guys know what could be making a loud clunking noise in the rear of my 91 4runner. It sounds like something is loose back there and it makes a lot of noise. I have to turn up my system to the point that it hurts in order to cover up the clunk. It hpens every time I hit the slightest bump or have a wieght shift from side to side (AKA every 2 seconds) and it all started after a day of slow speed off roading. It's driving me nuts. I tightend the spare and that isn't it and I have also tightened the bolts on my reciving hitch (it's a crapy 3 pice one) with no improvement. The next step will be to take the hitch off and weld it together and see if that helps. Any ideas?

I bet its your trunk monkey. Do a search for the "trunk monkey" and hopefully thats it.

This happens to me from time-to-time. In my case, it's the top nut on the passenger side shock. It keep's working itself loose.

To check, reach around your passenger side tire and grab the top of the shock case. If you can turn it, I'd bet that you found your clunking noise.

It's a lot of fun to get this tightend down on my truck (96 4Runner), I dunno what it's like on yours... Good luck!

I fix it

I got a little impacient and found that if I shook the bumper hard it made a sound and I have a new one on the way so I figued i'd just take the twisted thing off. Did the trick. Thanks for the help though.

The Trunk Monkey keeps your flux capacitor in top shape. You should check it every 10,000 miles.

The trunk monkey was a video clip from some commercial. You would have an issue on the road like an aggressive driver messing with you and you would push the "trunk monkey" button on your dash and the trunk pops and out comes a monkey with I think was a tire iron. It was a joke sorry. I had a similar noise relating to clunking and the bumper not to long ago but knew what it was right away being I had a new tail pipe installed and had it installed a little to close to the bottom of the bumper. I get getting clunking until my buddy carefully stepped on the top of the exhaust to pull it away. It worked. I tried to add the link for the trunk monkey but it didnt work. You may find the vid clip under thread (road rage or road games)

OK.... so Im up to date on the trunk monkey and type R stuff, but seriously headlight and taillight fluid.... whoever came up with this.... I have a pretty good feeling that its another stupid thing, but I dont get it... someone explain this...

You have to check it every 10K miles along with the nut behind the stering wheel don't ya know? I can't beleve I was actually trying to figuer out what part unter the back of my 4runner had the formal name of "trunk monkey." lol. I really bused up when I figured it out.
