Brakes, Service and Upgrade Opinions
Hey all -
My 4Runner now has 38,000 miles on it and I started getting some strong modulation in the front brakes during heavy braking.
When I had my Z-service at 30,000, the stealer said I had over 50% pads left nad everything was fine.
I called them and asked about a front brake job and they quoted me $370. I was told the hub had to be removed to turn the rotors.
Anyway - if I'm going to drop a bunch of dough on a standard brake job, are there any suggestions or ideas on what I should do.
I mean - is there an TRD upgrade package? Is it normal to warp my rotors this early? Was the stealer telling the truth that they have to pull the hub to turn my rotors?
Any suggestions welcom

All you really need to know.

Sounds like you just need to turn the rotors.

I got quoted $670 for replacement of front rotors and pads on a 2nd gen from the stealer. Isn't that disgusting? The rotors just popped right off, pads were easy as hell, and I got better-than-oem pads and Brembo rotors.

According to TSB BR007-00, 99 and 00 4Runners have defective rotors. Turning them will not work, they must be replaced. Cheapo $40 rotors fix the problem, too bad Toyota used even cheaper ones than that.
And yes, your dealer is lying. The rotors pop on and off as on most cars, simply remove the wheel and caliper.
It looks like you all have dealers which use the more colorful definition of 'service'.

Past that they are a piece of cake to do yourself.

A TSB wont do squat if you are out of the warranty period - which you are. However, all Toyota parts and workmanship are covered for 12mo/12K miles. Not sure if you fall into that category.

Well, I did have my Schedule Z service withing that time and milage period and they said everything was fine, the modulation has gotten worse over the past month, so I'm guessing that it won't be covered.

If you've added an aftermarket cupholder, then your known factory defective rotors definitely won't be covered.
You can usually get a free copy of any TSB from the Dealer 'Service' department. By law, they at least have to let you read the book of TSBs anytime you want.
Basically, it says 'replace rotors and pads'.
