Long story short

A coworker.. just got an h3.. so this guy wants to go wheeling and I was just curious about their prowess. I think hes got 20 inch chrome ventis wrapped in toyo 305/50s, havent seen the truck yet hes taking delivery in a few days.

No personal experience, but I've heard that they're not too bad straight outta the box... But still, it's a glorified Tahoe....

If he had realistic tires/rims on his H2 he'd be fine but with 20" of *bling* under his rig he's going to have problems.

It's too bad so many trucks and SUVs have their 4wd pretty much rendered useless by the oversize wheel craze. Form over function is the norm. Love people that throw 100000000 spoke Daytons on their C6 Vettes which shows it's sad when some people and their taste comes into $$$$$.

(sorry for the rant but it's a fad that's silly IMO but to each his own)

I thought the H3's were on the Colorado platform and have the same 5-cylinder motor.

actually i think it is setting on the colorado/canyon platform, and it uses the gm inline 5 i dont know that its full time 4wheel drive will be good offroad unless its got some type of traction control or limited slip. but clearing 32''s stock with plenty of room, they are a pretty neat rig.

i remember reading the inline 5 is underpowered for its size and being a GM.

I drove an H2 at the General Motors car show on wheels, they had a little off road course set up. It seemed to do alright but the guy told me the transmissions went out on three of the four trucks they had during the show which is only 3 days long and all the trucks were brand new.

It looks pretty good but it's just a poor mans H1.

Capable, but it is a GM product. We all know what that means.

Here's a good summary of the H3:
"So how come the Hummer finished last? Because it had to travel 200 miles to the trail head and 200 miles back to L.A. — on pavement. Its on-road dossier proved weak. The H3 produces so little power — posting the slowest 0-to-60 time — that we were always downshifting to third to pass. As the Jeep and Nissan darted into holes in rush-hour traffic, the Hummer lagged farther and farther astern, until it fell out of radio contact. And those monster-sidewall tires, so compliant and capable off-road, were just plain squirmy on asphalt, affecting directional stability. The H3 lost further points for the least commodious back seat, where, in typical GM fashion, your knees are up near your chest. The Hummer made the greatest racket at WOT, induced too much lateral head toss, and offered the least towing capacity. At speed, the wind roar around that pancake-flat windshield sounded like Victoria Falls, and the view out — out of all three Hummer models, come to think of it — is like peering through the mail slot in your front door. Did the light turn red? You’ll have to lean forward to find out.

The H3 wants three more cylinders, and there’s no earthly reason it should weigh 560 more pounds than the Toyota FJ Cruiser."

locking diffs and low crawl ratio, it does good on trails. underpowered on the road maybe, but not in 4lo. Just a suped up colorado

You know, I would really like to wheel with one of these. They look like they could be decent on the trails, and fun to kick around. The only thing is every time I find someone who has one, it's some thugged out kid from the burbs, or a soccer mom, and neither one usually wheels. Ohh well maybe in a few years, when they'll be alot cheaper.

I believe I read that the H3's have like 76 to 1 crawl ratio. That is pretty darn low for a stock crawl ratio.

As i was reading this thread i hoped someone would catch that, you have it right, they are nothing like a tahoe, those would be the H2's and i think they are a very capable off road rig for stock, the H3 is not as good, but also costs a lot less than an H2, and H1

those have to be comparable to our 4runners with that inline 5...my buddy has a colorado...he says its slower than he would like..He has a magnaflow muffler...it sounds weird..kinda sounds like my 4runner but just weird

I beg to DIFFER, a H2 is a fullsize rig and very top heavy (1.5' taller than a H1), which equals bad for trails and most offraoding. Now they do have some good traits. Now the H3, has very good demesions, locker and low crawl ratio. I'm not talking reliability, but getting through stuff the H3 will almost always do it better than the H2.

I'm sure he doesn't have the off road package which includes skid plates, rear locker, the 4:1 transfer case, and 33" BFG A/T's. He probably didn't even know what it was so he didn't get it. If he doesn't have this option, then he won't be able to go very far.

The H3's manual tranny option is nice and a rarity on an SUV and what I've read and seen the H3 is very capable but I don't want to be driving one when it's reliability issues show up and of course it will be miles from anywhere.
