I was hoping I could bolt the 6-speed up to my 3.4L because my friend wants my tranny now. I was talking about doing to 4.0L swap and I have another friend who wants to buy my 3.4L in a few months. So I would run the 6-speed now then do the engine swap in a few months.
But now Im starting to think about all the hassle the 3.4L swap was in my '91 and how much more work it will be to put the 4.0L in. I highly doubt it will use the same motor mounts as my 3.4L, what kind of oil pan issues I would run into, etc.
I guess I need to start researching that swap.

The issues you will have are:
the steering shaft clearing the starter
the oil pan won't clear the crossmember
the exhaust is routed differently
ECU differences
I have already pondered all this. Now if you plan on doing a SAS, none of these will matter. The oil pan is perfect, starter won't matter and exhaust can route in a similar fashion as a 2005.....
I have a 2001 frame, so I'll be able to mock everything up to check clearances. Like I said if it don't fit it'll be perfect for my buggy. I already have complete front and rear axle assemblies. All I'd need to buy is a tubing bender and of course tube to build the chassis.....

I would be more intrested in a auto to 5sp swap. A six would be even cooler, but I am sitting on a mint runner with a supercharger and I am stuck with a slushbox. You folks with the manual have it so much better. Would it be possible to swap the ECU and engine harness, do you think that would work? I am lost on this, it seems that most 4runner have autos, but there is no one out there who knows how to get rid of them for a manual.

It would be far easier to sell your runner and buy a 5-speed, the 2001-2002 runners came only as an auto and to convert would be quite a challenge. The reason you don't see any threads on this swap is simple, nobody has....
