4Runner stops reving at 4000 RPM
So today i tried to pass someone on the interstate and when the trans kicked down and reved to 4000 RPM it acted as though the rev limiter kicked in. I know some vehicles have a limp mode they operate in that limits RPM... I don't have any engine lights on... I do have the deck plate mod and ISR mod, I think it's called... but they have been done for some time now. This is the first I've felt of this problem. I did find a guy on youtube with the exact same problem... I'll try to link it.

Nothing... No input? I'm thinking it has something to do with the MAS air. Maybe it's reading too much air or something... I know this sounds crazy... If only I had a check enigine light on I could diagnose it better...

So how did flatsac fix his issue? Can you get him to reply via YouTube perhaps?
Sorry not an auto tranny guy myself-but it could not hurt to have the codes scanned even though you are not seeing any indicator at the dash- perhaps one is stored up?
Good luck you have me very curious-please stay in touch so everyone can learn.

I would take it out and let it do it for a mile or so . Then shut it off and pull over without letting it run in any other range then read the plugs
If its lean it could be low fuel pressure or injector failure
if there is no misfire involved I would suspect fuel system which probably wouldnt code
TPS or MAF would probably leave a code
I would think a melted Cat would act this way but would throw a rear O2 sensor code
a plugged muffler probably wouldnt leave a code

the video guy said he just got a K&N which could jam the MAF sensor
the oil from the K&N gets on the heated element of the MAF and discombooberates it

Check that cat. exact same thing happend to 2 of my vehicles. The cat didn't actually "melt" they just both broke apart internally which clogged the exhaust and wouldn't let me even get about 30mph without wanting to sputter and die out. Both times, i never got a check engine light either because the O2 sensor didn't fail yet.

I think it's the plug wires... I was looking for any cross fire the other day in the garage witht he lights off and the plug wires were glowing blue when it started to stutter... I'm going to replace them and see...
I do appreciate the input though. I'm glad someone's trying to help.
Thanks fellas. I'll let yopu know asap...

I had the same thing on my 96 4Runner 3.4 and it turned out that the woodruff key had worn causing some movement on the crank pulley. My guess, loose crank pulley or worn woodruff key.

The crank bolt backed out. Happened to mine 4 months after I did my t-belt. I took out the radiator, pulled off the crank pulley, made sure the marks still lined up, and put red loctite on the bolt. I set my 1/2 inch impact to max and cranked the ˟˟˟˟ out of that bolt. No problems as of late.
