My completely stock (motor wise) 1999 4runner just got to about 75k miles. So far, the only things the only things i change normally include: the oil (fully synthetic), air filter, pcv valve, and thats about it. I was wondering what i should do now to keep it running as good as it does. I thought of differential gear oil, fuel filter, timing belt, spark plugs, etc. What is it that needs to be done? Thanks in advance.

I did the timing belt, new coolant, oil, oil filter, fuel filter, rear/center/front differentials, spark plugs, serpentine belt, brake fluid, and transmission fluid. The Toyota website also has some good links to recommended maintenance.

just visited the toyota web site and did not see mention of replacing timing belt for the 4runner... I have checked 60K, 75K, 90k, 100K miles intervals. I have also double check the owners manual - no mentions of timing belt. I have visually checked the timing belt itself last year ( 75K miles ) and the belt looked fine - no cracks, belt itself is flexible (not hard), all the teeth looks just fine...

What is the concensus here?

I talked to my Toyota service manager about 2 weeks ago about the 1999 4Runner timing belt replacement and he told me to bring it in at 90,000 for replacement. So that is next year for me.

90,000 is the milage. I just did it early to spend money I don't have

Don't forget to change the water pump when you have the timimg belt changed, the dealer will advise you to do that too, I took my 97 when it had around 85k, by the way it cost me around $750 so get your wallet ready.....good luck

Thanks for the info....ill search next time too. I didnt think of the water pump but i guess its good to do it all at the same time. Whats the average cost for a new water pump from toyota? Thanks

i believe for 99 and up, the timing belt is 90k. for 98 and under to 96, its 80k. dont quote me on that. but a safe interval would seem to be 80k.

i had my water pump (new), thermostat (new), timing belt (new) and all drive belts (new) doen for $510 here in LA. SF is CRAZY expensive!

Actually timing belt and water pump are not too hard to replace. It is just a bit time consuming and make sure you align the timing mark, you will be fine. GOt yourself the Toyota Factory service manual and you can diy!!

Except for oil changes, generally all the preventative maintenance is set up on 30,000 mile intervals and some inspections at 15,000 mile intervals.

There is a book that comes with the owner's manual that describes the maintenance required to keep your warranty valid. That will have everything you should do laid out in time and/or mileage intervals.

Here is what I do.

Every 30,000 miles I replace all the fluids to include the coolant, tranny, transfer, diffs, and brake fluid. The spark plugs should be replaced every 30,000 miles.

Every 60,000 miles I do belts including the timing belt, water pump, and all the hoses. I do mean all the hoses, radiator, oil cooler, and heater hoses.
