Also: a 255.85r16 is a 33x10.50, not a 35.
As for the gearing, we need to know what gears you have now and what size tires it came with stock...

A 35" tire will rub on EVERYTHING in there. You would need at least a 3" body lift, aftermarket rims, and some fender cutting to do 35's. Not to mention you will want to re-gear, which is some $$$$ too... I'm guessing this is only going to be a mall-crawler? I say that because 35's will rub like crazy off road without some serious lift, even 33's rub in some cases.

With that much lift, go ahead and go with 305/70/16. They are 33x12.50 and will be perfect.
35's are a pain in the ass unless you have considerable fender trimming. I have 8" of lift and still rub at full stuff.
As for gearing, go for 4.88's but, you prolly wont need to if your going with 33s

i am having trouble identifying the stock gear ratio
i am going with the 33's instead
it came with 265 70 16's stock
and ill definately try the speedo gearing trick!
i have the c/tr & a/tm numbers if they will help identify the gearing
it is a japanese truck so the first two of the vin are jt
the c # is 1a5
tr # is lj45
a # is a30a
tm# is a340f
hope this helps
now i am completely lost

so 285 75 16
and 305 70 16
are basically the same height
what gives
i also saw where someone said that
\305's couldnt be mounted safely on stockers
so 33's with a 3 inch sl and a 1 " bl right?

So to convert from metric to inches height:
Tire Width: Width = (W)/25.4
Easy, just convert from millimeters to inches.
Tire Height: Overall Height = ((2*((W)*(SHP/100)))/25.4)+RD
Little tougher. You take the tire width, multiply by the percentage value,
multiply by 2 because there are two sidewalls, convert to inches, and add
the rim diameter in inches.
So a 285x75r16 is:
------------------
Width: 285/25.4 = [11.22 in.]
Height: ((2*((285)*(0.75)))/25.4)+16 = [32.83 in.]
A 305x70r16 is:
------------------
Width: 305/25.4 = [12.00 in.]
Height: ((2*((305)*(0.70)))/25.4)+16 = [32.81 in.]
So a 305x70r16 is about 3/4 of an inch wider than a 285x75r16, but the same overall height.

thanks brian you made up my mind
i ll go with the 285's
they probably perform on the street better
i am sure they are lighter
they sound safer
thanks guys for all the great input
i ll post pics when the project is finished
i just cant quit adding things

yeah, thats how it goes, im putting 285-75-16's on, street tread (yokohama geolanders)... on stock 16x7 rims.... the have 3/8 inch or so clearance between tire and frame up front when turning, and about 3/8 inch clearance on upper-a arm... this is with about 3 inch suspension lift, havent checked rears, but should be ok....
