3.4 alternator sludge

I got this truck 10 months ago w/ 74000 miles and recently noticed a thick "sludge" covering the engine side of the alternator. Its very thick and doesn't look wet but its clogging the slots on the front of the alternator. There has been no sign of oil leeks. The only thing I can come up with is a relationship to the head gasket recall which Toyota said was done a couple of years ago (If it blew before replacment?) or it appears the the timing belt was replaced only a thousand miles prior to me purchasing the truck. Could any of these be related or discounted? I'm new to this engine and quite clueless. Also is it best to let the alternator run its course or attempt to clean it. a degreaser and water doesnt sound like a good idea. Please help, Im paranoid!!!
